Iran Attacks UK Military Base After British PM Greenlights Strikes

The United Kingdom has confirmed that an Iranian kamikaze drone struck a Royal Air Force installation in Cyprus, marking the first time the escalating Middle East conflict has directly impacted a British military base.

The impact occurred at RAF Akrotiri, located within the UK’s Sovereign Base Area in southern Cyprus.

According to the UK Ministry of Defence, armed forces responded to a suspected drone strike at approximately midnight local time.

Base personnel had been instructed hours earlier to exercise maximum security and seek shelter.

The BBC reported that the drone struck the airfield, causing minor damage.

No casualties were reported among the roughly 2,000 service members and family members stationed there.

In a statement, the Ministry of Defence said:

“Our Armed Forces are responding to a suspected drone strike at RAF Akrotiri in Cyprus at midnight local time.

“Our force protection in the region is at the highest level, and the base has responded to defend our people.”

Strike Follows Starmer’s Green Light to U.S.

The attack came just hours after Prime Minister Keir Starmer authorized the United States to use British bases, including the strategically vital airfield at Diego Garcia, for operations targeting Iranian missile and drone capabilities.

“The United States has requested permission to use British bases for that specific and limited defensive purpose,” Starmer said Sunday.

“We have taken the decision to accept this request – to prevent Iran firing missiles across the region, killing innocent civilians, putting British lives at risk, and hitting countries that have not been involved.

“The basis of our decision is the collective self-defence of longstanding friends and allies, and protecting British lives.

“That is in accordance with international law,” he added.

Starmer’s announcement followed multiple Iranian drone and missile strikes on civilian targets in the United Arab Emirates, Israel, Qatar, and other regional nations.

Regional Response Escalates

At an emergency United Nations Security Council meeting, the Gulf Cooperation Council, which includes Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates, joined by Jordan and Syria, condemned Iran’s actions.

Bahrain’s UN Ambassador Jamal Fares Alrowaei described the attacks as “a blatant violation of our sovereignty and territorial integrity, and they threaten the security and stability of the entire region.”

Starmer, French President Emmanuel Macron, and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz issued a joint statement signaling potential alignment with U.S. and allied defensive operations.

“We will take steps to defend our interests and those of our allies in the region, potentially through enabling necessary and proportionate defensive action to destroy Iran’s capability to fire missiles and drones at their source,” the three leaders said.

“We have agreed to work together with the U.S. and allies in the region on this matter.”

The strike on RAF Akrotiri underscores the widening footprint of the conflict, as Iranian drones now reach beyond the immediate battlefield and directly target Western military infrastructure.

While British officials emphasized that damage was minimal and no injuries occurred, the attack represents a significant escalation, bringing the confrontation to a NATO ally’s doorstep.
