A chilling new signal believed to be tied to Iran has begun appearing across the radio spectrum in Europe, with shortwave listeners in the United Kingdom reporting mysterious encrypted broadcasts shortly after the death of Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
Amateur radio enthusiasts say the transmissions resemble a classic “numbers station,” a type of coded broadcast historically associated with espionage and covert intelligence operations.
The signal has been designated “V32” by the monitoring group ENIGMA2000, which tracks suspected intelligence transmissions around the world.
Encrypted Number Broadcasts Heard Across UK and Europe
Shortwave listeners say the station broadcasts strings of encrypted numbers late at night and early in the evening.
The transmissions have reportedly been heard clearly across the United Kingdom and parts of Europe, with signals bouncing off the ionosphere and appearing on the frequency 7910 kHz (7.910 MHz) in Upper Sideband mode.
Monitors have described the broadcast as a male voice, possibly synthetic, speaking in Farsi while reading out sequences of numbers.
Listeners also report a distinct dual-tone beep every three seconds, a technical signature commonly associated with modern clandestine communications.
Numbers Stations Long Linked to Spy Networks
Numbers stations have long fascinated intelligence watchers and radio hobbyists.
Traditionally, the broadcasts consist of monotone voices reading long sequences of numbers, which are believed to be encrypted instructions for undercover intelligence operatives using one-time pads.
Although governments rarely confirm their existence, such stations have been widely documented during the Cold War and in modern intelligence operations.
The new signal’s appearance amid rising geopolitical tensions has raised questions about whether covert communications are now being transmitted into Iran or the surrounding regions.
Broadcasts Occurring Twice Daily
Monitoring groups say the transmissions typically occur twice per day:
- 2:00 a.m.
- 6:00 p.m.
Signals intelligence monitors, including the Covert Access Team, say the broadcasts have remained consistent since they were first detected.
Radio operators across Europe have begun logging each transmission in an effort to determine whether any recognizable pattern exists in the numbers.
Signal May Not Originate Inside Iran
Despite being labeled an Iranian numbers station due to the language used, early technical analysis suggests the transmitter may not actually be located inside Iran.
Triangulation data published online reportedly points to a possible source in the Red Sea region, rather than inside Iranian territory.
Observers have also noted that the signal has occasionally been targeted by “The Iranian Bubble,” a known radio jamming system.
This has led some analysts to speculate that the transmissions may be coming from a foreign intelligence service communicating with assets or resistance networks connected to the turmoil inside Iran.
Signal Appears in Restricted Military Band
The frequency used by the mysterious station, 7910 kHz, has also raised eyebrows among radio experts.
That part of the spectrum typically sits outside major civilian broadcast bands.
It is more commonly used for military, diplomatic, or intelligence communications.
Some analysts say that alone suggests the transmissions may have a strategic or covert purpose.
A Ghostly Signal Amid Growing Instability
As the coded broadcasts continue, radio enthusiasts across Europe are closely tracking each transmission.
For now, the identity of the operator behind station V32 remains unknown.
But the sudden appearance of encrypted signals shortly after the collapse of Iran’s leadership has fueled speculation that intelligence services are now actively communicating with covert networks across the region.
The eerie broadcasts on 7.9 MHz serve as a reminder that even in the modern digital era, some of the world’s most sensitive messages are still being whispered across the radio waves.
