Japan Sounds Alarm of Major Incoming Tsunami After Massive Earthquake Strikes

Japan’s disaster authorities have just issued urgent tsunami alerts after a powerful 7.6-magnitude earthquake violently shook the nation’s northeast, sending residents fleeing into the night as alarms blared along the coast.

The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) warned that waves up to 3 meters could strike the shoreline after the quake hit at 11:15 p.m. (local time) on Monday.

Its epicenter sits roughly 80 km off Aomori Prefecture at a depth of 50 km.

Within minutes, tsunami warnings were issued for Hokkaido, Aomori, and Iwate, with the first waves, 20 to 50 cm, already hitting ports in Aomori’s Mutsu Ogawara and Hokkaido’s Urakawa, according to JMA.

Local outlets later confirmed additional tsunami readings:

   • 40 cm waves in Mutsu City (Aomori) and Urakawa Town (Hokkaido)

   • 30 cm in Erimo Town (Aomori) and Kuji City (Iwate)

   • 20 cm in Shiraoi Town (Hokkaido)

Violent Shaking: “Upper 6” on Japan’s Scale

The tremor registered an “upper 6” on Japan’s 7-level seismic intensity scale.

The level of shaking is so severe that standing becomes impossible, and most heavy furniture collapses.

Damage to wall tiles, windows, and interior structures is common at this intensity.

Government Mobilizing Emergency Response

Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi addressed the nation from the PM’s Office, vowing a full mobilization under a “human life first” policy.

Authorities are already confirming structural damage, and two fires have been reported in Aomori City.

Tens of Thousands Ordered to Evacuate

Disaster alerts from Japan’s NERV emergency app show that nearly 30,000 residents across Iwate, Miyagi, and Aomori have been ordered to evacuate immediately.

Videos flooding social media show residents running from swaying homes and interior furniture violently shifting during the quake.

Transportation & Power Impacted

Japanese authorities have already confirmed the following:

   • East Japan Railway suspended multiple train lines across the region.

   • Tohoku Electric reported thousands without power.

   • Nuclear plants run by Tohoku Electric and Hokkaido Electric reported no irregularities.

The region is still haunted by memories of the catastrophic 2011 magnitude-9.0 earthquake and tsunami, which devastated the same part of Japan.

Financial Ripple Effects

Global markets reacted instantly.

The yen weakened sharply, touching session lows against the dollar (¥155.81) and the euro before partially recovering.

Japan’s Seismic Reality

Japan is one of the most earthquake-dense nations on Earth.

The island nation sits on the volatile Ring of Fire, responsible for 20% of all global quakes of magnitude 6.0 or higher.

The country experiences tremors every five minutes on average.

More Activity Possible

JMA warns that aftershocks and further seismic activity remain possible in the coming days.

Tsunami alerts are still in effect in multiple prefectures as authorities assess damage and monitor sea levels.
