Former National Security Adviser John Bolton says he’s considering launching a run against President Donald Trump for the 2024 presidential election.
Bolton revealed the potential move during an interview on NBC News’s “Meet the Press” on Monday.
During the interview, Bolton was responding to comments from Trump regarding the recent “Twitter Files” released by new CEO Elon Musk on Friday.
Trump argued that the level of election interference revealed between Twitter executives colluding with “the Biden team” should be enough to “overturn” the 2020 results.
Setting the stage for the entry of Trumpโs first rival in the Republican primary contest, Bolton took aim at his former boss over the suggestion.
If no other potential Republican candidates make โShermanesque statementsโ in response to what Trump said, Bolton declared,ย โIโm going to seriously consider getting in.โ

Bolton, known for hisย hawkish foreign policy views, served in roles in the Reagan administration and as U.S. ambassador to the United Nations under President George W. Bush.
He later worked as Trumpโs national security adviser from April 2018 to September 2019, when Trump forced Bolton out amid foreign policy disputes.
During the summer before the 2020 contest,ย Bolton told ABC News he would not vote for Trump.
Bolton claimed that Trump was not fit for office and stated he would โfigure out a conservative Republican to write in.โ
Trump has been harsh on Bolton too, however.
He described Bolton as โone of the dumbest people in Washingtonโย after Bolton criticized Trump forย reportedly consideringย martial law to overturn the 2020 election results.
Senate Minority Whip John Thune (R-SD) told reporters on Monday he disagrees with Trumpโs statement and said the comments present a โgolden opportunityโ for potential challengers,ย according to The Hill.
At least one Republican who hasย entertained a 2024 run, former Governor Chris Christie (R-NJ), has spoken out against Trump for the suggestion.
โIt should not be hard to say that the 2020 election is over,โย he said Sunday on ABCโs “This Week.”
โI think to be a presidential candidate you canโt just say, โI support the Constitution,’โ Bolton said in his interview with NBC.
“You have to say, โI would oppose people who would undercut it.'”
