JPMorgan Chase Bank has filed a lawsuit against Chicago’s Democrat former Mayor Lori Lightfoot, alleging she failed to pay roughly $11,000 in credit card debt for more than a year.
According to court records, the bank marked the account as a charge-off in March after approximately 17 months of nonpayment.
Lightfoot’s last recorded payment was $5,000 on August 7, 2024.
She was served with a subpoena at her Chicago residence in October, as first reported by the Chicago Tribune.
Lightfoot’s court appearance is scheduled for later this year
The lawsuit raises questions about personal financial responsibility for a former big-city mayor who once oversaw a multibillion-dollar municipal budget.
Lightfoot reported an adjusted gross income of $402,414 in 2021.
She earned an annual salary of about $216,000 during her four-year term leading Chicago.
Bank records cited by Breitbart News indicate Lightfoot has held the credit card account since 2005.
Despite her income, public disclosures show she withdrew approximately $210,000 in early distributions from her retirement account.
The move has prompted questions about her finances.
Lightfoot left office in 2024 amid mounting fiscal challenges for Chicago, including an $85 million budget shortfall.
She also made history as the first Democrat Chicago mayor in nearly 40 years to lose reelection after a single term.
Neither Lightfoot nor JPMorgan Chase has offered public comment on the dispute beyond what appears in court filings.
The absence of an explanation has drawn scrutiny, particularly given the length of time the balance remained unpaid.
While the amount at issue is modest compared to the scale of the budgets Lightfoot once managed, critics say the case underscores broader concerns about accountability among public officials.
For many Americans, an $11,000 credit card balance represents a serious financial burden.
However, it’s typically one that is resolved long before it reaches a courtroom.
As the case proceeds, it will test not only the former mayor’s legal position but also her credibility at a time when public trust in political leaders remains strained.
