Twice-failed Democrat presidential candidate Kamala Harris has denied that there was a “conspiracy” to hide former President Joe Biden’s mental decline from the American people.
Instead, Harris argues that Biden only appeared to be cognitively impaired because he just “got tired.”
Harris dismissed concerns of a coordinated effort to cover up Biden’s physical and mental decline in a forthcoming memoir.
The remarks appear in “107 Days,” Harris’s upcoming book detailing her failed 2024 presidential run and her frustrations as Biden’s second-in-command.
An excerpt published by The Atlantic zeroed in on her strained relationship with Biden and his aides.
“Many people want to spin up a narrative of some big conspiracy at the White House to hide Joe Biden’s infirmity,” Harris writes.
“Here is the truth as I lived it.
“Joe Biden was a smart guy with long experience and deep conviction, able to discharge the duties of president.
“On his worst day, he was more deeply knowledgeable, more capable of exercising judgment, and far more compassionate than Donald Trump on his best.
“But at 81, Joe got tired,” she insists.
She admitted that Biden’s age showed in “physical and verbal stumbles,” citing his disastrous debate performance following a grueling travel schedule.
Harris insisted she never believed Biden was incapacitated, but said she would have spoken up if she had.
Beyond Biden’s decline, Harris used the book to vent about her treatment inside the White House, accusing senior staff of undermining her and even feeding negative press narratives.
She complained that then-Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre and the communications shop rarely defended her publicly, and argued that stories about her “chaotic” office and high staff turnover were exaggerated.
“Their thinking was zero-sum: If she’s shining, he’s dimmed,” Harris wrote.
“None of them grasped that if I did well, he did well.
“That, given the concerns about his age, my visible success as his vice president was vital.
“It would serve as a testament to his judgment in choosing me and reassurance that if something happened, the country was in good hands.
“My success was important for him.”
Harris also faulted Democrats for not intervening sooner to discourage Biden from running again in 2024.
She called it “reckless” to defer entirely to him.
“‘It’s Joe and Jill’s decision.’ We all said that, like a mantra, as if we’d all been hypnotized,” Harris continues.
“Was it grace, or was it recklessness?
“In retrospect, I think it was recklessness,” Harris writes.
“The stakes were simply too high.
“This wasn’t a choice that should have been left to an individual’s ego, an individual’s ambition.
“It should have been more than a personal decision.”
Harris’s memoir is likely to intensify scrutiny over how Democrats handled Biden’s decline and how she was positioned as his understudy while the party privately grappled with his age and capacity.
