Former Vice President Kamala Harris issued a statement Sunday commending the deal that freed Israeli hostages from Hamas captivity.
However, Harris notably avoided mentioning President Donald Trump by name.
Instead, crediting only “the President and his team.”
“I am thankful and deeply encouraged that this ceasefire has brought long-awaited moments of joy and reunion — as 20 Israeli hostages are finally reunited with their loved ones and Palestinian families and the people of Gaza begin to receive desperately needed relief from unimaginable suffering,” Harris said.
The statement acknowledged Israel’s war against Hamas following the October 7, 2023, terror attack.
During the assault, the terrorist group murdered more than 1,200 people and abducted hundreds.
“Through diplomacy and persistence, today is an important first step toward a more hopeful future,” Harris continued.
“I commend the leaders and partners whose efforts made this agreement possible, including the President and his team.
“There is still much more work to do to secure a lasting peace, ensure the safety and dignity of every innocent life, and build a future where Israelis and Palestinians can live side by side in freedom and security,” she concluded.

Democrats Divided Over Trump’s Role
While Harris stopped short of naming Trump, other Democrats were more direct in reacting to the breakthrough ceasefire.
Rep. Jasmine Crockett (D-TX) mocked the president on social media.
In a post on X, Crockett wrote:
“Raising hell at home & then pretending to be the President of Peace is diabolical.”

Sen. John Fetterman (D-PA), however, struck a different tone.
Fetterman wrote in a post on X:
“Credit to @POTUS for a breakthrough ceasefire of this awful war.”
Context: Harris’s 2024 Loss
The statement comes less than a year after Trump trounced Harris in the 2024 presidential election, winning both the Electoral College and the popular vote.
Harris became the Democrat nominee after President Joe Biden dropped out of the race and endorsed her campaign.
However, she ultimately failed to stop Trump from securing a second term.
While many have praised Trump for his role in the peace deal, others have attempted to credit Biden and Harris for ending the conflict.
Notably, the war raged under the previous administration with no end in sight until Trump returned to the White House.
Trump, meanwhile, has received international recognition for his 20-point peace plan in the Middle East.
The deal has pushed Hamas toward releasing hostages and has forced Arab states to distance themselves from the Iran-backed terror group.
