Colin Kaepernick had his first workout with an NFL team since 2017 today after being given a chance by the Las Vegas Raiders, according to reports.
This is according to two sources close to the former NFL quarterback and Yahoo Sports.
The reporting was confirmed by other media outlets.
According to ESPN: โColin Kaepernick, who last played professional football in 2016 โ the year he started kneeling during the national anthem to protest racial injustice โ is scheduled to work out Wednesday for the Las Vegas Raiders, league sources told ESPN.
โIt will mark Kaepernickโs first workout with an NFL team since being exiled.โ
Last month Raiders owner Mark Davis said he was open to signing Kaepernick but many players and sports anchors were not buying it.
Davis said earlier:
โI believe in Colin Kaepernick. He deserves every chance in the world to become a quarterback in the National Football League. I still stand by it. If our coaches and general manager want to bring him in or want him to be the quarterback on this team, I would welcome him with open arms.โ
Kaepernick recently said he would consider playing as a backup quarterback to get back into the NFL. Something he had resisted before.
โI know I have to find my way back in,โ Kaepernick said.
โSo, if I have to come in as a backup, thatโs fine.
โBut thatโs not where Iโm staying,โ he continued.
โAnd when I prove that Iโm a starter, I want to be able to step on the field as such.
โI just need that opportunity to walk through the door,โ he said.
ESPNโs Stephen A. Smith said:
โIn 2019, after you filed a lawsuit against the National Football League, after you reached a multimillion-dollar settlement, after you made it clear you donโt have any trust for them, and they made it clear they have no trust for you, because of pressure from Jay-Z, who is obviously advising the NFL on social justice issues and things of that nature, along with a multitude of people inside and outside of the media and youโre listening to one of them because I spoke to many people on behalf of Colin Kaepernick, the NFL said weโre going to conduct a workout.
โAnd Colin Kaepernick refused to work out because of some waiver issue, some liability issue.โ
โAt the end of the day, what are you saying, Colin Kaepernick? You didnโt trust them?
โWell, duh. We know you didnโt trust them.
โThey didnโt trust you because they felt like if an individual team, none of whom called you, by the way, if an individual team gave you a workout that you would sit up there if you donโt make the team, they were saying you might sit up there and accuse us of being racist because they didnโt pick you on the team, so as a result, we canโt trust you either.
โBoth sides donโt trust one another. Who the hell doesnโt know that?โ
โAnd still, you took the position, regardless of Jay-Zโs help, regardless of the mediaโs help, regardless of public fury against the National Football League knowing everybody was going to be all over them, watching them like a fine-tooth comb, you still didnโt trust anybody.
โYou want to listen to your lady and your Colin Kaepernick crew and you wanted to debunk everybody else, and here you are having a conversation about football.
โMy brother, you ainโt played in five years. We donโt know what you can do but we still believe in you.
โI believe Colin Kaepernick could be on an NFL team right now and help a team despite being gone for five years because I think heโs that gifted. That ainโt the point.
โThe point is coaches, players and executives all answer to owners of those respective football teams and they donโt want to touch you.
โAnd you knew that and the one in, you refused to exploit. I understand your point about not trusting them, hell we donโt trust them.
โBut we were willing to fight for you, you didnโt want to listen to anybody. And now the NFL is saying, ratings are up 10% from the year before. Super Bowl ratings were up 6%.
โWe got some of the best numbers since 2015, thatโs without Colin Kaepernick. Why would we invite this trouble?
โWho didnโt know they were gonna do that? Who didnโt warn Colin Kaepernick they werenโt gonna do that?
โThatโs why we told you. Go work out.
โShow what you can do and let the momentum build to force their hand.
โBut you didnโt wanna play. You didnโt wanna talk. And thatโs why youโre still doing interviews instead of throwing touchdowns,โ he said.
