Liberal Media Elites Blast Democrats for ‘Caving’ to Republicans on Ending Shutdown

Prominent liberal media figures are blasting the Democratic Party after eight Senate Democrats joined Republicans to advance a GOP plan to reopen the government.

The move finally brought an end to the Democrats’ blockade that kept the federal government shut down.

However, the Democrats have infuriated the party’s activist base by caving and handing Republicans a major win.

The rare split, during the longest government shutdown in U.S. history, triggered an avalanche of criticism from the Left.

Former CNN talent, liberal commentators, and even New York Times columnists are accusing Democrats of surrendering and failing to stand up to President Donald Trump.

Democrats ‘Caved’

Former CNN host Don Lemon declared on TikTok that Democrats simply “caved.”

On ABC’s “The View,” co-host Whoopi Goldberg said Monday that:

“Eight Senate Democrats threw in the towel by siding with the GOP to advance a vote that could lead to the government reopening.”

Co-host Sunny Hostin went even further, blaming Democratic leadership for trusting Republicans at all.

“Shame on you the first time,” Hostin said.

“You do it twice, three times, four times, shame on me.

“Shame on the Democrats for even believing that the Republicans will, you know, even vote on it.”

Hostin said Democratic voters wanted a party that would fight, not fold.

“The working people want the Democratic Party to fight for them.

“And now, they just caved and surrendered.

“I think Chuck Schumer — his days are over.

“And if he cannot keep his caucus together, he needs to go.

“He needs to be replaced.”

Media Allies Call for Schumer’s Ouster

The criticism went far beyond TV hosts.

Left-wing radio host Dean Obeidallah said on MSNBC:

“He’s just not the right person at the right time…

“So I think honestly, this is the end of Chuck Schumer as we go forward.”

Former MSNBC host Mehdi Hasan also called for Schumer to resign, while several liberal lawmakers joined the pile-on.

Rep. Ro Khanna (D-CA) wrote:

“Senator Schumer is no longer effective and should be replaced.

“If you can’t lead the fight to stop healthcare premiums from skyrocketing for Americans, what will you fight for?”

Rep. Seth Moulton (D-MA) posted that the vote was “another example of why we need new leadership.”

Cillizza ‘Stunned,’ Ezra Klein Says Democrats Just Rescued Trump

Former CNN journalist Chris Cillizza said in his Substack that he was “stunned” by the decision.

Cillizza is calling it “utterly baffling.”

He argued Democrats accepted the same GOP offer they had rejected for nearly three weeks.

“So the plan and the deal that Democrats took is literally the same deal that John Thune… has had on the table for at least two and a half, three weeks,” Cillizza wrote.

He noted that Schumer wasn’t even involved in crafting the final agreement but would almost certainly get blamed for it.

Even the New York Times joined the rebuke.

Columnist Ezra Klein wrote a piece titled “What were Democrats Thinking?”

Klein said he would not have supported the deal and argued Democrats bailed out Trump politically.

“Shutdowns are an opportunity to make an argument, and the country was just starting to pay attention,” Klein wrote.

He also warned Democrats may have just taught Trump a damaging lesson:

“And I worry that Democrats have just taught Trump that they will fold under pressure.

“That’s the kind of lesson he remembers.”

The Democrats Who Broke With Their Party

The eight senators who voted with Republicans were:

  • Angus King (I-ME)
  • John Fetterman (D-PA)
  • Catherine Cortez Masto (D-NV)
  • Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH)
  • Maggie Hassan (D-NH)
  • Jacky Rosen (D-NV)
  • Tim Kaine (D-VA)
  • Dick Durbin (D-IL), the #2 Senate Democrat

Their vote reopened the door for resolving the shutdown.

However, also opened a political war inside the Democratic Party.
