Liberal talk show hosts Charlamagne and Stephen A. Smith didn’t hold back while discussing former Vice President Kamala Harris’s claim that America’s “system is broken.”
The two left-wing commentators, both of whom have been outspoken figures in the political arena, found Harris’s statement not only laughable but also hypocritical.
They noted that Harris has been thriving for decades in that very same system.
After months of staying largely out of the public eye, Harris made waves last week during an appearance on “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.”
During the interview, she touched on her decision not to run for the governorship of California, making broad, sweeping generalizations about how, “Just for now, I don’t want to go back in the system. I think it’s broken.”
Her comments immediately drew criticism, especially from those questioning her lack of concrete solutions or vision for the future, just a few months after her crushing loss to President Donald Trump.
Harris’s remark struck many as especially odd, considering her longstanding political career as a state attorney general, U.S. senator, and vice president.
All of those positions are squarely within the system she claimed was broken.
Charlamagne, a longtime supporter of Harris, expressed his confusion and disappointment at her statement.
“Kamala is a friend, man,” he said.
“I’ve been supporting Kamala for a long time.
“But I can’t sit here and say I disagree with you.
“I think that she should do whatever it is that she wants to do, but when I heard her say that, you know, ‘The system is broken‘ and she wants to take a step back from the system – her whole career has been the system.”
Smith quickly agreed, adding that it made no sense for Harris to suddenly step away from the system she had spent her entire career navigating and benefiting from.
“It made no sense!” Smith exclaimed, sharing his disbelief over Harris’s statement.
The conversation continued as both hosts pointed out the glaring hypocrisy of someone who had been deeply involved in the very system she now criticized.
“Her whole career has been the system,” Charlamagne said, echoing Smith’s skepticism.
“I just don’t see how now, you know, she’s going to take a step back away from the system.”
Smith also took the opportunity to remind viewers of the many strategic missteps Harris has made throughout her career, including her failure to separate herself from former President Joe Biden, which hurt her chances as a potential leader in the future.
“You’ve been there practically all your life,” Smith pointed out.
“You’ve been an attorney, a state attorney general.
“You’ve been a prosecutor. You’ve been a senator.
“You’ve been a vice president.
“My God, you’ve been a part of it.
“And now you’re saying it’s broken?
“That means you couldn’t do but so much to fix it when you was in it.”
For both hosts, the issue isn’t just Harris’s vague statement about the system; it’s the broader pattern of inaction and failure that has marked her time in office.
“The system was broken long before Donald Trump, you know, got into office,” Charlamagne said, calling out Harris for trying to distance herself from the very system she’s been part of for decades.
WATCH:
In short, Harris’ recent comments were seen by both Charlamagne and Smith as a symptom of her long-running inability to position herself as a genuine alternative to the status quo.
It leaves many wondering whether she has the political acumen or willpower to be a leader moving forward.
With no clear vision and no answers to fix the very system she helped create, Harris’s future as a political leader remains uncertain at best.
