A Los Angeles City Council member is going after Home Depot, accusing the hardware chain of being “complicit” with raids on illegal aliens and vowing to block the opening of a new store in her district.
“Take your orange aprons somewhere else,” Councilmember Ysabel Jurado, a Democrat, wrote on Instagram.
“Home Depot has no place in Eagle Rock.”
Home Depot has filed plans with the Los Angeles city planning department to demolish a shuttered Macy’s in Eagle Rock Plaza and build a new superstore on the property.
But Jurado, a freshman councilmember and former tenants’ rights attorney, argued the chain has “remained silent” about Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) operations that have taken place outside its stores.
She claimed the silence made Home Depot “complicit” in federal enforcement.
“These raids are part of a disturbing pattern across Los Angeles, with ICE repeatedly targeting Home Depot parking lots – common gathering spots for day laborers – without judicial warrants, in clear violations of people’s rights,” Jurado said.
“And yet, Home Depot has remained silent.”
The Los Angeles Times published surveillance footage reportedly showing an ICE raid at a Westlake Home Depot last Thursday.
A black van pulled up to street vendors, and armed agents in tactical gear pursued individuals attempting to flee, deploying what appeared to be tear gas.
The raid resulted in at least 15 arrests, the paper reported.
The same Westlake location was also the site of “Operation Trojan Horse” on August 6, when federal agents exited a Penske truck and arrested more than a dozen alleged illegal immigrants.
That raid took place just days after a federal appeals court upheld a temporary restraining order on broad immigration sweeps in California.
President Donald Trump deployed nearly 5,000 troops to Los Angeles in June to restore order after anti-ICE riots escalated into violence.
More than 4,000 National Guard troops and 700 Marines were sent in after rioters torched vehicles, burned American flags, and assaulted police with heavy objects.
“When your name becomes associated with terror, and you refuse to speak, you become complicit,” Jurado wrote.
“Home Depot has chosen power and profit over the working people who sustain it.”
Meanwhile, Home Depot pushed back, stressing it has no involvement in ICE operations.
“We aren’t notified that ICE activities are going to happen, and we’re not requesting them,” a spokesperson said.
“In many cases, we don’t know that arrests have taken place until after they’re over.
“We’re required to follow all federal and local rules and regulations in every market where we operate.”
DHS confirmed details of the latest Westlake operation.
“On August 28, Border Patrol conducted a targeted operation near 1675 Wilshire Blvd, in Los Angeles, California,” DHS said in a statement.
“During the operation, eight individuals were arrested—including six illegal aliens from Guatemala, one illegal alien from El Salvador, and one illegal alien from Mexico.
“Three of those arrested had extensive rap sheets for crimes including visa overstay, possession of a controlled substance, and grand theft.
“One individual also had a final order of deportation from an immigration judge.
“Under President Trump and Secretary Noem, if you break the law, you will face the consequences.
“Criminal illegal aliens are not welcome in the U.S.”
Jurado represents District 14, including downtown Los Angeles, and describes herself as the daughter of “undocumented Filipino immigrants.”
She has pledged to fight the Eagle Rock project.
“I unequivocally oppose Home Depot coming to Eagle Rock Plaza, a mall that has been a gathering place for the Filipino community in Los Angeles,” she said.
“I will not allow violence to take root in our neighborhoods.
“Our communities deserve safety, dignity, and businesses that fight for the people, not against them.”
