Louisiana Republican State Senator to Run for U.S Senate Seat Because Incumbent Bill Cassidy ‘Sucks’

Louisiana State Sen. Blake Miguez, a Republican, is throwing down the gauntlet in the 2026 U.S. Senate race, and he isn’t mincing words.

In a bold campaign launch video released Tuesday, Miguez declared his candidacy with a scathing rebuke of incumbent Republican Sen. Bill Cassidy (R-LA).

Miguez said bluntly that he is running to unseat the incumbent GOP senator “because Bill Cassidy sucks.”

The state lawmaker is a staunch conservative and former world shooting champion.

He slammed Cassidy for siding with Democrats during the second impeachment trial of President Donald Trump in 2021.

Cassidy was one of seven GOP senators who voted to convict Trump after the Jan. 6 Capitol breach.

They voted with Democrats even though the trial took place after Trump had left office and ultimately failed to reach the required threshold.

In a post on X, Miguez said:

“Today, I’m announcing my candidacy for the United States Senate.

“I’m running because the American Dream is worth fighting for — and DC phonies forget that.

“Bill Cassidy betrayed our state, our President, and our principles.”

Miguez’s message pulls no punches:

“As your next Senator, I won’t bend.

“I won’t break,” he vowed.

“I’ll stand with President Trump.

“And I’ll never stop fighting to put America First.

“Bill Cassidy had his shot. He missed. I won’t.”

Cassidy’s team responded to the challenge with confidence.

Campaign press secretary Ashley Bosch said in a statement that the senator is prepared for any challenger.

“Anyone can join this race, but it won’t change the outcome — Senator Cassidy will win,” Bosch said.

“He’s a proven conservative fighting alongside President Trump to secure our southern border, unleash American energy, and put America First.

“Senator Cassidy is fighting to protect our values and delivering real results for Louisiana.”

But Miguez isn’t the only one aiming to unseat Cassidy.

Louisiana State Treasurer John Fleming, another Republican aligned with Trump, launched his own Senate campaign last year.

It makes Cassidy’s path to reelection increasingly crowded and contested from the Right.

Cassidy has served in the U.S. Senate since 2015, following a stint in the U.S. House of Representatives and time in the Louisiana state legislature.

The Bayou State’s Senate showdown is shaping up to be a high-stakes battle for the soul of the Republican Party.

The race will serve as a test of how far Cassidy’s vote to convict Trump will follow him with Louisiana voters in 2026.
