A new poll shows that most Americans support President Donald Trump’s federal crime crackdown in Washington, D.C.
The majority of citizens say they view large American cities as “unsafe” due to soft-on-crime policies.
According to the Harvard CAPS/Harris survey, 54% of registered voters said Trump’s actions in the nation’s capital are “justified and necessary.”
The findings come as the administration points to a sharp decline in crime since Trump asserted emergency powers over the city earlier this month.
As Slay News reported, the success of the crackdown has included a 12-day streak without a single reported homicide in the nation’s capital.
Vice President JD Vance told reporters in the Oval Office:
“This town averaged one murder every other day for the last 20-30 years, which means in two short weeks the president and his team have saved six or seven lives, people who would have been killed on the streets of DC.
“[Those individuals] are now living, breathing, spending time with their families because the president had the willpower to say no more, we’re not going to give the streets of DC over to vagrants and robbers and murderers,” Vance added.
U.S. Attorney for D.C. Jeanine Pirro credited Trump’s deployment of federal agencies and National Guard units with fundamentally altering the city’s security environment.
“The deterrent effect of all that’s going on as a result of the president’s move to make D.C. safe and beautiful is literally changing the safety landscape of Washington,” Pirro said in a video posted to X.

The poll found 54% of respondents support Trump declaring a crime emergency in D.C..
56% said the average major American city is “unsafe.”
A slim majority of voters (51%) believe Trump’s use of the National Guard in Washington will make the capital more safe.
Independents also backed the crackdown, with 47% of that bloc approving of Trump’s moves.
On the ground, the results are dramatic.
Robberies in D.C. are down 42% and carjackings have dropped by 85% over the past two weeks, according to the DC Police Union.
The union has publicly endorsed the federal takeover.

Federal officials said Sunday that a member of the Venezuelan Tren de Aragua gang was arrested in the city.
The violent thug had multiple prior arrests and four immigration encounters.
Not everyone is celebrating the decline in crime, however.
A Democratic National Committee (DNC) presentation on Monday claimed that Trump’s anti-crime push is a “political liability” for Republicans.
The presentation was sponsored by the left-wing criminal justice group Vera Action.
Meanwhile, Trump has indicated that Chicago could be the next city where he considers federal intervention.
The Harvard CAPS/Harris poll surveyed 2,025 registered voters online between August 20–21.
