Mamdani Supporters Struggle to Explain Why They Voted for Him

Several supporters of New York City’s radical socialist Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani were unable to name a single reason they voted for him or explain any of his proposed policies when questioned in the aftermath of his election.

Journalist Cam Higby interviewed multiple Mamdani voters who expressed enthusiasm but struggled to articulate why.

Many could not describe what Mamdani plans to do in office or how he intends to pay for his promised initiatives, which include free buses, government-run grocery stores, rent freezes, and a $30 minimum wage.

One young woman could not give a specific reason for her support beyond his social media presence.

“Um, I don’t really know. I just do,” she said.

“Yeah, because I keep seeing all of these like cute TikToks of him like partying and clubbing and honestly he’s like, one for the people, you know.”

Another supporter, who acknowledged she is not from New York, admitted she had “no idea” what Mamdani’s policies are, despite declaring that she supports the far-left Democratic Socialist.

“I have no idea, I’m not from New York,” she told Higby.

“I support innovative thinking and democracy.

“I’m an optimist,” she added after being told socialism has only ever failed around the world.

A different voter said he supported Mamdani because of his immigrant background.

After stating that affordable housing is his top issue, he was unable to say how Mamdani’s administration would pay for it.

“What does he say he’s gonna do that you hope he does?” Higby asked.

“Affordable housing, I guess?” the supporter responded.

“That’s my biggest one right now.”

The woman with him, who also supports Mamdani, said that she had “nothing to add.”

Another voter argued that “the Palestinian issue” was the most important factor in the race.

“Obviously, the Palestinian issue is the most important,” the supporter said.

“That’s obviously why he won.”

When Higby asked how a New York City mayor could address foreign affairs, the man accused him of misrepresenting his words and walked away.

“You’re putting words in my mouth, thank you very much,” he replied.

Mamdani has proposed a series of large-scale government programs, including raising the minimum wage to $30, offering free public buses, establishing city-run grocery stores, increasing taxes, and creating an unarmed response agency for non-violent 911 calls.

During an appearance on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” this week, Mamdani did not offer a clear explanation of how the city would fund these initiatives.

Some prominent Democrats were hesitant to support his candidacy.

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) endorsed Mamdani only days before the election.

Meanwhile, Rep. Tom Suozzi (D-NY) backed Independent candidate Andrew Cuomo.
