Mexico Extradites 26 Top Cartel Leaders to Face Charges in U.S After Deal with Trump

In a major victory for U.S. law enforcement, Mexico is extraditing 26 top cartel leaders to the United States this week as part of a deal with President Donald Trump’s administration.

The men were scheduled to arrive on U.S. soil on Tuesday to face prosecution.

In a statement, Attorney General Pam Bondi said:

“Today is the latest example of the Trump administration’s historic efforts to dismantle cartels and foreign terrorist organizations.

“These 26 men have all played a role in bringing violence and drugs to American shores — under this Department of Justice, they will face severe consequences for their crimes against this country.

“We are grateful to President Sheinbaum and the Mexican government for their collaboration in this matter.”

Among those being handed over are Abigael González Valencia, a leader of the “Los Cuinis” cartel aligned with the violent Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG).

The Trump administration has formally designated CJNG as a foreign terrorist organization.

Roberto Salazar, accused of involvement in the 2008 killing of a Los Angeles sheriff’s deputy, is also included in the deal.

Mexico’s Attorney General’s Office and Security Ministry confirmed the transfers.

They noted the agreement came after the U.S. Justice Department pledged not to seek the death penalty for any of the men.

The move comes amid the Trump administration’s sweeping effort to strengthen border security and dismantle Mexican cartels flooding the U.S. with narcotics.

In a previous statement, Deputy White House Press Secretary Anna Kelly said:

“President Trump’s top priority is protecting the homeland, which is why he took the bold step to designate several cartels and gangs as foreign terrorist organizations.”

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum told reporters Friday that Mexico is cooperating closely with the United States.

However, Sheinbaum said there will be no U.S. military presence inside Mexico.

“We co-operate, we collaborate, but there is not going to be an invasion,” she said.

“It’s off the table, absolutely off the table.”

Still, reports indicate Trump has privately authorized U.S. military force against designated cartel organizations in Latin America.

The move allows American forces to directly engage cartel targets if necessary.

The extraditions come just ahead of 25% tariffs on Mexican goods entering the U.S.

Trump agreed to delay an additional 30% tariff for 90 days to allow for negotiations.

This is the second major handover of cartel leaders this year.

In February, Mexico extradited 29 cartel figures.

The extradition included Rafael Caro Quintero, the drug lord accused of orchestrating the 1985 torture and murder of DEA agent Enrique “Kiki” Camarena.
