Several Minnesota officials who have come forward to blow the whistle on rampant Somali-linked fraud in the state have revealed that they have received multiple threats to force them into staying silent.
The House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform convened a hearing this week, hearing testimony from state representatives and officials about alleged exploitation of taxpayer-funded programs.
The hearing was titled “Oversight of Fraud and Misuse of Federal Funds in Minnesota: Part I.”
Lawmakers on Capitol Hill heard testimony from Minnesota state representatives and officials about alleged exploitation of taxpayer-funded programs.
Following the hearing, Minnesota state Rep. Marion Rarick (R) told Lindell TV reporter Allison Steinberg that whistleblowers who raise concerns about fraud have faced retaliation.
Rarick cited Minnesota Department of Human Services compliance reporting specialist Faye Bernstein as an example.
Bernstein previously raised concerns about the legality of DHS contracts, Rarick said.
Subsequently, Bernstein became the target of investigations and workplace actions.
“She was heavily investigated, she was moved to a different state agency, she was retaliated against in every kind of way you could think,” Rarick said.
“What’s happened now is retaliation has escalated, and now it’s, ‘You’re going to lose your job, you’re going to lose your home, we’re going to track your children, we’re going to make sure you can’t get a job anywhere else in state government.’”
Rarick added that in Minnesota, where Democrats control major metropolitan areas, such retaliation can effectively end a person’s career in state government.
Some whistleblowers have already been terminated.
However, Rarick said she hopes congressional scrutiny will deter further retaliation and encourage others with information to come forward.
