As Gavin Newsom continues his efforts to shapeshift into a “moderate” ahead of the 2028 presidential election, the radical Democrat governor is proposing a freeze on illegal aliens signing up for California’s Medicaid program.
The governor’s office released a fact sheet with a proposal for freezing adult illegal aliens’ enrollment in full-scope Medi-Cal, California’s Medicaid.
The document notes that the proposed freeze would take effect “no sooner than January 1, 2026.”
The policy would apply “to new adult applicants over age 19.”
People would not “be kicked off their health care,” according to the document.
It also notes that Gov. Newsom is proposing a $100 per month premium for Medi-Cal enrollees 19 and up with “unsatisfactory immigration status.”
The fact sheet states that this “refers to people whose immigration status makes them ineligible for federally funded Medicaid, including people with lawful status and the undocumented.”
Under the proposal, this would take effect Jan. 1, 2027.
Unsurprisingly, the proposed moves are being partially blamed on President Donald Trump.
“Trump’s pendulum swings on tariffs have slowed the economy and weakened state revenues by a staggering $16 billion,” the document declares.
Newsom claims that he “refuses to turn his back on hardworking Californians, especially when it comes to their basic health care needs.”
“But because of the $16 billion Trump Slump and higher-than-expected health care utilization, the state must take difficult but necessary steps to ensure fiscal stability and preserve the long-term viability of Medi-Cal for all Californians.”
Newsom, who has served as governor since early 2019, survived a gubernatorial recall election in 2021.
He is serving his second term as California governor and, by law, cannot run again.
Newsom will leave office in 2026.
He is widely expected to launch a presidential bid when his gubernatorial term ends.
In recent months, Newsom has begun pitching himself as a “moderate” alternative to Trump.
In March, Newsom claimed that he now believes allowing male athletes to compete in female sports is “deeply unfair.”
Newsom acknowledged the issue during a podcast interview with Turning Point USA founder and conservative activist Charlie Kirk.
The liberal governor agreed that forcing women to compete against male athletes is “deeply unfair.”
Kirk was a guest on the debut episode of the governor’s new podcast, “This is Gavin Newsom.”
“The young man who’s about to win the state championship in the long jump in female sports, that shouldn’t happen,” Kirk said to Newsom.
You, as the governor, should step out and say no. Would you do something like that? Would you say no men in female sports?”
“Well, I think it’s an issue of fairness,” Newsom replied.
“I completely agree with you on that. It’s deeply unfair.”
Newsom later added that men competing in women’s sports is “a fairness issue.”
“So that’s easy to call out the unfairness of that,” Newsom said.
