Heads are rolling across Europe as multiple European officials have stepped down or been sidelined after newly released Department of Justice (DOJ) documents revealed continued contact with convicted child predator Jeffrey Epstein following his 2008 guilty plea.
Former British ambassador to the United States Peter Mandelson resigned from the House of Lords.
Norway’s ambassador to Jordan and Iraq, Mona Juul, has been removed from her post pending review.
Slovakia’s Miroslav Lajčák, a former president of the United Nations General Assembly and adviser to Prime Minister Robert Fico, also stepped down after text messages with Epstein surfaced.
Epstein pleaded guilty in 2008 to procuring a child for prostitution and soliciting a prostitute.
Mandelson Correspondence Draws Scrutiny
Documents show Mandelson maintained communication with Epstein after the conviction.
In 2003, Mandelson wrote Epstein a 10-page note calling him his “best pal.”
By December 2009, Epstein emailed Mandelson, then the UK’s first secretary of state, regarding whether JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon should contact Chancellor of the Exchequer Alistair Darling about offering additional funds for a small-business program in exchange for tax considerations during the financial crisis.
Mandelson replied:
“Yes and mildly threaten.”
In the aftermath of the 2008 financial crash, Mandelson leaked sensitive government data to Epstein to allow the pedophile to cash in on the crisis with non-public information.
Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer dismissed Mandelson, a vocal Trump critic, from his diplomatic post last September.
Speaking publicly, Starmer said:
“I am sorry. Sorry for what was done to you, sorry that so many people with power failed you.
“Sorry for having believed Mandelson’s lies and appointed him, and sorry that even now you’re forced to watch this story unfold in public once again.”
Starmer added that Mandelson had “portrayed Epstein as someone he barely knew.”
Norwegian Ambassador Sidelined
According to The Hill, Norway’s Mona Juul said her limited contact with Epstein stemmed from her husband’s relationship with him:
“It is important for me to clarify that the contact I have had with Epstein has originated in my spouse’s relationship with him.
“I have had no independent social or professional relationship with Epstein, including not mediating or connecting contacts to Epstein.”
She acknowledged a 2011 meeting:
“However, in retrospect, I see that I should have been much more careful.
“This also applies to a short private visit in 2011, while I was on leave from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which I now acknowledge that I should have handled differently.”
DOJ materials also referenced a 2014 dinner invitation sent to Epstein on behalf of Juul and her husband.
Slovak Official Steps Down Over Text Messages
Miroslav Lajčák resigned after text messages exchanged with Epstein in October 2018 became public.
Messages included:
- “Don’t you miss me there?”
- “Why don’t you invite me for these games?”
- “I would take the ‘MI’ girl.”
“Who wouldn’t?” Epstein replied.
“You can have them both, I am not possessive.
“And their sisters,” Epstein added.
Ongoing Fallout
None of the officials has been charged with wrongdoing connected to Epstein.
The DOJ document releases, however, have prompted political consequences across multiple countries as scrutiny of Epstein’s network continues.
The disclosures have renewed questions about how widely Epstein maintained relationships with political, diplomatic, and business figures after his criminal conviction and whether additional names may emerge as further records are reviewed.
