NFL star Stefon Diggs has been arrested on felony assault charges, according to reports.
An otherwise strong comeback season in New England has been overshadowed by serious legal trouble involving the Patriots’ receiver.
According to a report from Boston25News.com’s Frank O’Laughlin, Diggs is facing allegations of felony strangulation or suffocation.
He is also charged with misdemeanor assault and battery.
The alleged incident reportedly occurred on December 2.
It allegedly took place just one day after New England’s Monday night victory over the New York Giants.
Diggs’ attorneys appeared in court on Tuesday.
The court hearing was just over 24 hours after the veteran wideout delivered a standout performance against the New York Jets.
During the game, Diggs recorded 100 receiving yards and a touchdown.
His legal team is seeking to keep the police report sealed.
While the case details may not become public immediately, the situation is unlikely to remain contained within team circles.
The NFL is expected to request information about the matter.
Depending on findings and severity, Diggs could be placed on the commissioner’s exempt list while the case proceeds.
The Patriots addressed the situation in a statement provided to Pro Football Talk, saying:
“The New England Patriots are aware of the accusations that have been made regarding Stefon Diggs.
“Stefon has informed the organization that he categorically denies the allegations.
“We support Stefon,” the statement adds.
“We will continue to gather information and will cooperate fully with the appropriate authorities and the NFL as necessary.
“Out of respect for all parties involved, and given that this is an ongoing legal matter, we will have no further comment at this time.”
Diggs is in his first season with New England and has been a key component of the Patriots’ offense, totaling 82 receptions for 970 yards and four touchdowns so far this year.
