NFL star Tua Tagovailoa had credited his Christian faith for his success and praised God for keeping him “encouraged.”
After hisย Miami Dolphins suffered their first defeat of the season Sunday, quarterback Tagovailoa said recalling Bible verses keeps him motivated.
The 25-year-old admitted that losing to theย Buffalo Bills 48-20 was โhumbling.โ
However, he said his Christian upbringing and Godโs Word โkeeps me encouraged in continuing to press forward, especially in times like this.โ
The October 1 defeat, leaving the Dolphins with a 3-1 record, came one week after Miamiโs historicย 70-20 win over the Denver Broncos.
Tagovailoaย has been outspoken about his faith since his college days at Alabama.
The NFL star, who suffered two concussions last season, has also been vocal about his Samoan culture, which reveres family, faith, and respect.
During Sundayโs post-game press conference, a reporter asked Tagovailoa how his faith affects his approach toย football.
The quarterback replied, โI think the best thing about being a believer of Jesus Christโฆis that the good Lord up above doesnโt care whether you win a game, whether you lose a game.โ
โFor me, itโs been a little tough having to play on Sundaysโฆhaving to watch church online after games.โ
But Tagovailoa acknowledged the benefits of being a Christian in pro football.
โAllowing me thisย platformโฆto me is the best thing in the world, to be able to profess my faith, something that I firmly believe in, something thatโs been foundationally instilled in me at a young age,โ he explained.
The quarterback, who wears eye black in the shape ofย crosses, said he prays before heading onto the field for offensive series.
โIโm on a sideline, looks like Iโm talking to myself, speaking in tongues,” he said.
“Some people think โWhat, this guy knows how to speak in tongues?โโ

โFirst and foremost, Iโd just like to give all theย gloryย to my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ,โ he told a CBS reporter.
โWithout him, nothing is possible for me.โ
