NFL Star Tua Tagovailoa Praises God after Game, Credits Christian Faith for Motivation

NFL star Tua Tagovailoa had credited his Christian faith for his success and praised God for keeping him “encouraged.”

After hisย Miami Dolphins suffered their first defeat of the season Sunday, quarterback Tagovailoa said recalling Bible verses keeps him motivated.

The 25-year-old admitted that losing to theย Buffalo Bills 48-20 was โ€œhumbling.โ€

However, he said his Christian upbringing and Godโ€™s Word โ€œkeeps me encouraged in continuing to press forward, especially in times like this.โ€

The October 1 defeat, leaving the Dolphins with a 3-1 record, came one week after Miamiโ€™s historicย 70-20 win over the Denver Broncos.

Tagovailoaย has been outspoken about his faith since his college days at Alabama.

The NFL star, who suffered two concussions last season, has also been vocal about his Samoan culture, which reveres family, faith, and respect.

During Sundayโ€™s post-game press conference, a reporter asked Tagovailoa how his faith affects his approach toย football.

The quarterback replied, โ€œI think the best thing about being a believer of Jesus Christโ€ฆis that the good Lord up above doesnโ€™t care whether you win a game, whether you lose a game.โ€

โ€œFor me, itโ€™s been a little tough having to play on Sundaysโ€ฆhaving to watch church online after games.โ€

But Tagovailoa acknowledged the benefits of being a Christian in pro football.

โ€œAllowing me thisย platformโ€ฆto me is the best thing in the world, to be able to profess my faith, something that I firmly believe in, something thatโ€™s been foundationally instilled in me at a young age,โ€ he explained.

The quarterback, who wears eye black in the shape ofย crosses, said he prays before heading onto the field for offensive series.

โ€œIโ€™m on a sideline, looks like Iโ€™m talking to myself, speaking in tongues,” he said.

“Some people think โ€˜What, this guy knows how to speak in tongues?โ€™โ€

Tagovailoa grew up in a nondenominational Christian church.

He credits that background with providing a firm foundation and allowing him to handle whatever football throws his way.

After a Dolphinsโ€™ victory on Sept. 10,ย Tagovailoaย referencedย Matthew 19:26ย during an on-field interview.

โ€œFirst and foremost, Iโ€™d just like to give all theย gloryย to my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ,โ€ he told a CBS reporter.

โ€œWithout him, nothing is possible for me.โ€

Tagovailoa, who grew up in Hawaii, is raising funds to โ€œHelp Heal Mauiโ€ after last monthโ€™s devastatingย wildfires.

His father, Galu Tagovailoa, said Samoan culture is โ€œall about giving backโ€ and โ€œbeing obedient.โ€
