Former President Barack Obama is facing backlash after asserting that the political Left represents unity, while simultaneously accusing conservatives of driving division across the country.
Obama made the remarks during a recent interview with progressive podcast host Brian Tyler Cohen.
During the interview, Obama framed conservatives as inherently divisive.
“The other side does the mean, angry, you know, exclusive, us/them, you know, divisive politics,” Obama said.
“That’s their, that’s, that’s their home court.
“Our court is coming together.”

The comments quickly drew criticism from observers on social media.
Many pointed to the political landscape following the 2024 election, when President Donald Trump secured a sweeping Electoral College victory, won all seven swing states, carried the popular vote, and led Republicans to control of both the House and Senate.
Obama’s characterization ignores the broader national mandate delivered by voters and downplays ongoing hostility directed at conservatives in public discourse.
UK journalist and broadcaster Piers Morgan responded bluntly after viewing the clip:
“Preposterously disingenuous nonsense.”
“The woke left has been the single meanest, angriest, exclusive, us/them divisive movement in history.”

Obama Escalates Rhetoric on Immigration Enforcement
In the same interview, Obama intensified criticism of federal immigration enforcement.
He delivered what observers described as his most direct endorsement yet of demonstrations opposing Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) operations in Minneapolis and St. Paul.
Without naming President Trump directly, Obama described the administration’s enforcement actions as “unprecedented” and alleged misconduct by federal agents, as Slay News reported.
However, Obama did not support his claims with cited investigations or official findings.
Obama told Cohen:
“It is important for us to recognize the unprecedented nature of what ICE was doing in Minneapolis, St Paul, the way that federal agents, ICE agents were being deployed, without any clear guidelines, training, pulling people out of their homes, using five-year-olds to try to bait their parents, all the stuff that we saw, teargassing crowds simply who were standing there, not breaking any laws.
He then framed the protests not as localized opposition to immigration enforcement, but as a broader national test of American values.
“Right now, we’re being tested, and the good news is, what we saw in Minneapolis and St Paul, and what we’re seeing in places across the country, including here in Los Angeles, has been the American people saying no,” Obama stated.
“At least a good number of the American people saying, ‘we’re going to live up to those values that we say we believe in.’
“As long as we have folks doing that, I feel like we’re going to get through this.”
Clash Between Rhetoric and Voter Mandate
Obama’s framing portrays enforcement of federal immigration law as something the nation must endure rather than a policy direction affirmed by voters in the most recent presidential election.
The contrast between calls for unity and sharp criticism of political opponents has fueled accusations of hypocrisy.
Many argue that the former president’s rhetoric risks deepening, rather than healing, the country’s political divide.
As debates over immigration enforcement, protest movements, and national cohesion continue, Obama’s remarks underscore the widening gulf between competing visions of law, order, and unity in American public life.
