Former President Barack Obama admitted this week that his marriage to Michelle has been facing serious strains since his time in the White House.
During a speech in the United Kingdom, Obama even acknowledged he has been “digging myself out of a hole” in their relationship.
He made the admission while speaking on Wednesday at London’s O2 Arena as part of his European speaking tour.
Obama reflected on the toll his presidency took on his marriage.
“I was digging myself out of the hole I found myself in with Michelle,” Obama said, according to The Standard newspaper.
“Now I’m at about level ground.”
The former president conceded that repairing the relationship had been a “challenge.”
The strain has been visible publicly, leading to speculation of a secret divorce.
Michelle Obama did not attend former President Jimmy Carter’s funeral in January.
Nor did she join her husband at President Donald Trump’s inauguration a week later.
Barack Obama attended both high-profile events alone.
While discussing his personal life, Obama also shifted to politics.
He blasted Trump’s recent remarks on autism and the use of Tylenol during pregnancy.
“We have the spectacle of my successor in the Oval Office, making broad claims around certain drugs and autism that have been continuously disproved,” Obama said.
“The degree to which that undermines public health, the degree to which that can do harm to women who are pregnant, the degree to which that creates anxiety for parents who do have children who are autistic … all of that is violence against the truth,” he continued.
The comments come days after President Trump indicated that his administration would launch what he called one of the largest medical research initiatives in U.S. history to uncover the root causes of autism.
Trump hinted at the announcement while speaking at the memorial service for Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk, telling the audience:
“Tomorrow we’re going to have one of the biggest announcement(s) … medically, I think, in the history of our country.”
The Trump administration formally identified acetaminophen, most commonly sold as Tylenol, as a potential driver of autism and ADHD earlier this week.
The Department of Health and Human Services announced it would notify physicians of the possible risks and launch a national campaign to inform families.
Tylenol’s manufacturer, Kenvue, strongly pushed back, insisting that “independent, sound science clearly shows that taking acetaminophen does not cause autism.”
The company said it was “deeply concerned with the health risk this poses for expecting mothers.”
However, old social media posts have emerged showing that Tylenol argues that it’s products are not recommended for pregnant women.
🚨 Wait what, even Tylenol tell their own customers not to use their products when Pregnant.
This was 8 years ago – but when Trump & RFK Jnr say it, based on Studies & Scientific Evidence they’re now ‘Anti-Science’? pic.twitter.com/S8gDM8H8dk

While Democrats like Obama have dismissed Trump’s statements as dangerous, the White House says its new health guidance reflects mounting scientific evidence and will direct unprecedented funding into research that families have long demanded.
