Wesley Dingus, the 48-year-old mayor of Butler, Ohio, has been forced to resign after the village council convened a special meeting to address what officials described as “personnel reasons.”
His resignation letter was read aloud and unanimously accepted by the council.
In the letter, Dingus stated that he was stepping down “not under stress but under duress,” a distinction that followed mounting legal trouble.
Council President Eric Tron will now assume the duties of mayor.
Facing Voyeurism Charges
Dingus was arraigned on February 19 in Mansfield Municipal Court on two misdemeanor voyeurism charges.
According to reports, surveillance footage allegedly captured him on two occasions smelling an underage girl’s underwear.
He has pleaded not guilty to the charges.
The voyeurism allegations came on top of an earlier arrest.
Dingus was taken into custody on August 17, 2025, on charges of aggravated assault and vehicular assault stemming from a July 11 incident that drew wider attention.
He remained in office during the pendency of those charges.
Council Calls Special Meeting
The village council called a special session to address the situation.
After Dingus’ resignation was submitted, the council moved quickly to accept it.
Tron, who now steps into the mayor’s role, told News 5 Cleveland following the meeting:
“I have mixed feelings about everything, but I’m just happy that things turned out the way they did, as far as how it went tonight.
“I think everybody’s kind of relieved the mayor resigned.”
The resignation followed public scrutiny and growing pressure, as the small village confronted allegations involving its top elected official.
Public Trust Abused
Dingus has pleaded not guilty and is defending himself in court.
The criminal proceedings will determine the outcome of the charges.
But in public office, legal standards and public confidence often operate on different tracks.
While guilt or innocence is decided in a courtroom, elected officials also rely on the trust of the communities they serve.
In a small village like Butler, that trust carries particular weight.
The mayor is not a distant figure but a visible part of daily civic life.
With Dingus’s resignation now official, village leadership transitions to Tron as Butler seeks to move forward.
The legal cases against the former mayor remain pending.
