Pam Bondi Names & Shames Dozens of ‘Sanctuaries’ That ‘Put American Citizens at Risk’

U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi has named and shamed almost three dozen so-called “sanctuary” jurisdictions across the country that have placed American citizens in harm’s way with their pro-illegal immigration policies.

The Department of Justice (DOJ) has identified 35 sanctuary cities and states across the U.S.

AG Bondi made it clear that legal action will be taken against these jurisdictions for their policies that protect illegal aliens.

Bondi stated that many of these cities and states, most of which lean blue, have policies that “impede law enforcement and put American citizens at risk by design.”

“The Department of Justice will continue bringing litigation against sanctuary jurisdictions and work closely with the Department of Homeland Security to eradicate these harmful policies around the country,” Bondi declared.

California, New York, Colorado, and Illinois are among the 13 states that have already faced lawsuits over their sanctuary policies.

Other cities on the DOJ’s list include Delaware, Nevada, Minnesota, Washington, D.C., and several others.

Illinois, where the lawsuit is the furthest along in the legal process, has already seen a setback.

A federal judge dismissed the DOJ’s claims, ruling that Illinois’ state and local policies are protected by the Constitution.

However, the DOJ still has the option to appeal or amend its complaint.

Despite some legal setbacks, the DOJ, which has focused heavily on immigration enforcement under the Trump administration, has had some victories.

For instance, Louisville, Kentucky, modified its sanctuary city policies after DOJ pressure.

The city agreed to cooperate more with federal authorities.

“This is a chance for these jurisdictions to come to the table and work with us to keep Americans safe,” a DOJ spokesperson said.

Other cities under scrutiny include Boston, New Orleans, Seattle, and Philadelphia, with four counties also on the list.

One of the key issues leading to these sanctuary designations involves detainer policies.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) uses detainers to request that local jails hold illegal immigrants for up to 48 hours so federal authorities can take over and make arrests.

Sanctuary cities, however, have policies in place to ignore these detainers, releasing individuals back into the community before ICE can act.

For example, Louisville’s mayor recently agreed to honor ICE’s 48-hour detainer request, ensuring that individuals suspected of being in the country illegally are not released prematurely.
