Pelosi: All American Presidents Have ‘Been Patriots’ Except Trump

Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) has declared that she believes President Donald Trump is the only POTUS in history who was a “patriot.”

Pelosi signaled this week that her final term in Congress will continue to center on opposing Trump.

She is arguing that the stakes of the upcoming midterm elections go beyond routine partisan politics.

In an interview published this week, Pelosi addressed the possibility of Democrats regaining control of the House in the midterms.

“We only need a handful, but I would rather have at least 30 now,” Pelosi said.

“But it doesn’t matter if I want to win more than we need, because I think the Republicans will try to play a stunt and challenge if it’s just a few seats.

“So it’s good to have the insurance of having many more.

“That’s the way I like it,” she added.

She then broadened her criticism.

“I’ve been in politics a long time, as you know, and we’ve had Democratic presidents, Republican presidents, they’ve all been patriots until now.

“We have to win this race.”

Pelosi continued:

“Our democracy is at stake.

“What is a democracy?

“A democracy is free and fair elections, an independent judiciary, freedom of the press, due process, rule of law, all of that.

“All of that diminished under this president and the Republicans in Congress.”

She concluded:

“It’s not just about his second term and what that is.

“It’s about the Congress of the United States abolishing itself and just yielding to him on every score.”

Sharp Accusation

Pelosi’s remark that prior presidents of both parties were “patriots until now” drew attention, given President Trump’s long-running “Make America Great Again” platform and his emphasis on America First policies.

The former speaker did not elaborate further on her definition of patriotism in the interview.

Pelosi has been a central Democrat figure opposing Trump since his first term.

Her opposition included two impeachment efforts and the formation of the Democrats’ anti-Trump House select committee “investigating” the Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol protests.

That committee became a focal point in broader Democrat efforts to undermine Trump’s first term and prevent him from running for office again.

Final Term Focus

Pelosi announced in November that she would not seek reelection this year but remains in Congress until her term ends in January.

In her closing stretch, she appears committed to framing the upcoming elections as a referendum not only on policy but on what she characterizes as institutional norms and the constitutional republic’s “democratic” governance.

As the interview suggests, Pelosi is maintaining her long-standing posture toward Trump and signaling that she intends to remain vocal until the end of her tenure.
