Pope Leo Sounds Alarm Over ‘Inclusive’ Speech Push: ‘A New Orwellian-Style Language Is Developing’

Pope Leo XIV has delivered a stark warning to Western nations, declaring that freedom of expression is rapidly eroding under the weight of “Orwellian” ideological conformity and manipulative language.

Speaking from the Vatican during his sweeping “State of the World” address, the pontiff cautioned that modern societies are drifting toward a form of Orwellian speech control that masquerades as inclusivity while actively silencing dissent.

“A new Orwellian-style language is developing which, in an attempt to be increasingly inclusive, ends up excluding,” the pope warned.

The remarks are likely to unsettle progressive factions within the Church and beyond.

“Words Must Describe Reality Again”

Born Robert Prevost and known as a straight-talking American pope, Leo XIV argued that language itself is being corrupted to serve ideological ends.

He said words must once again be used to “express distinct and clear realities” in order for societies to engage in honest dialogue and avoid conflict.

Truth, the pope stressed, is not optional.

Without truth-telling, he warned, dialogue becomes impossible and social fracture inevitable.

“It is painful to see how, especially in the West, the space for genuine freedom of expression is rapidly shrinking,” Leo said.

He described a growing paradox: governments and institutions claim to champion inclusion while simultaneously punishing those who refuse to conform to approved belief systems.

According to the pope, this trend directly undermines freedom of conscience and other fundamental human rights.

Free Speech Under Threat

Leo XIV made clear that freedom of expression is not merely a political preference but a moral necessity.

When speech is policed, and ideas are forced into ideological molds, he said, societies do not become more just, they become more fragile, more divided, and more authoritarian.

His comments echo growing global concerns about censorship, compelled speech, and the shrinking space for dissenting views across much of the Western world.

Strong Condemnation of Surrogacy

The pope also issued an unambiguous condemnation of surrogacy, calling it a violation of human dignity.

He said surrogacy turns pregnancy into a “negotiable service” and reduces children to commodities rather than human beings.

According to Leo XIV, the practice exploits women by treating their bodies and the generative process as tools, distorting the natural and relational foundation of the family.

Assisted Suicide Called “Deceptive Compassion”

Leo XIV further condemned the global push for euthanasia, warning that “assisted suicide” is often presented as compassion while abandoning society’s duty to care for the vulnerable.

He said the elderly, isolated, and suffering should be met with palliative care, presence, and support, not encouragement to end their lives.

Euthanasia, he argued, offers a false solution that disguises despair as mercy.

A Call to Truth and Peace

The address was heard by more than 180 ambassadors from nations with diplomatic ties to the Vatican.

Leo concluded by urging leaders and citizens alike to return to humility, truth, and authentic dialogue, insisting that peace cannot be engineered through coercion or ideological control.

“A peaceful world,” he said, “is built by those who act from humble hearts and live in truth.”

In an era of enforced narratives and shrinking speech boundaries, the pope’s message was unmistakable: without freedom of expression, neither peace nor justice can survive.
