Britain’s Prince Andrew has been forced to surrender his royal titles following pressure from his brother, King Charles III.
The king was reportedly planning to strip Andrew of the titles due to the ongoing scandals surrounding his relationship with the late child sex trafficker Jeffrey Epstein.
However, Andrew reportedly agreed to give up the titles, including “Duke of York,” voluntarily before Charles removed them.
In a statement, Andrew said the “continued accusations” about his conduct have become a distraction for the monarchy.
The announcement comes after fresh revelations about Andrew’s ties to Epstein and meetings with an alleged Chinese spy at the center of an espionage scandal.
In a statement released by Buckingham Palace, Andrew said:
“In discussion with The King, and my immediate and wider family, we have concluded the continued accusations about me distract from the work of His Majesty and the Royal Family.
“I have decided, as I always have, to put my duty to my family and country first.
“I stand by my decision five years ago to stand back from public life.
“With His Majesty’s agreement, we feel I must now go a step further.
“I will therefore no longer use my title or the honors which have been conferred upon me.
“As I have said previously, I vigorously deny the accusations against me.”
The move follows high-level palace meetings, with aides reportedly reaching a “tipping point” after a new wave of damaging headlines.
While Andrew will retain his birthright as a prince, he will surrender his dukedom, his membership in the prestigious Order of the Garter, and the honors attached to his royal standing.
Epstein Connection Resurfaces
Andrew’s downfall has long been tied to his association with convicted pedophile Epstein.
Despite his infamous 2019 Newsnight interview claiming he cut ties with Epstein in 2010, leaked emails show he maintained contact into 2011, even after the notorious photo of him with Virginia Giuffre was published.
In one message, Andrew allegedly wrote to Epstein: “We are in this together.”
The renewed scrutiny has reignited calls for accountability, with royal insiders acknowledging that further revelations about his Epstein ties are likely to emerge.
Links to Chinese Spy Scandal
The Telegraph also revealed that Andrew met multiple times between 2018 and 2019 with Cai Qi, a top Chinese Communist Party official closely linked to President Xi Jinping and implicated in a collapsed British spy case.
Cai is alleged to have received sensitive information passed by two British nationals now accused of espionage for Beijing.
Andrew also developed a close friendship with Yang Tengbo, a suspected Chinese spy later described by a High Court judge as having formed an “unusual degree of trust” with the Duke.
Yang was invited to Andrew’s birthday party in 2020 and assisted in launching the Chinese branch of the Duke’s Pitch@Palace business initiative.
Public Pressure Mounts
Though Andrew had already been stripped of his military titles, charity affiliations, and barred from using the “HRH” honorific, until now, the palace resisted pushing him to relinquish his dukedom.
A YouGov poll earlier this year showed 67% of Britons favored removing the title.
The palace ultimately opted to press Andrew to step aside voluntarily rather than force a parliamentary intervention, which would have been required to legally strip him of the dukedom.
Andrew’s ex-wife, Sarah Ferguson, will also relinquish her “Duchess of York” title and revert to being known simply as Sarah Ferguson.
For Andrew, the move represents a deeply personal blow.
Long known to relish the prestige of his titles, he now faces life in the shadow of scandals that continue to tarnish both his reputation and that of the monarchy.
