Prince Andrew’s live-in ex-wife, Sarah Ferguson, has been cut off by several charities after leaked correspondence revealed she once described convicted child trafficker Jeffrey Epstein as a “steadfast, generous and supreme friend.”
Children’s hospice Julia’s House announced Sunday that the Duchess of York would no longer serve as a patron.
“Following the information shared this weekend on the Duchess of York’s correspondence with Jeffrey Epstein, Julia’s House has taken the decision that it would be inappropriate for her to continue as a patron of the charity,” the group said in a statement.
Other organizations quickly followed suit.
The Teenage Cancer Trust, the Natasha Allergy Research Foundation, and Prevent Breast Cancer all confirmed they had severed ties with Ferguson.
The British Heart Foundation and the Children’s Literacy Charity also ended her roles, according to BBC reporting.
The Epstein Connection
The fallout stems from emails allegedly written by Ferguson to Epstein in 2011.
The correspondence came just after she gave an interview to the Evening Standard, publicly denouncing him and expressing “deep regret” over their friendship.
“I know you feel hellaciously let down by me from what you were either told or read, and I must humbly apologise to you and your heart for that,” Ferguson wrote, according to the Daily Mail.
In the same message, she called Epstein a “steadfast, generous and supreme friend,” despite his 2008 pedophilia conviction for soliciting prostitution from a minor.
Ferguson claimed she had been pressured to cut ties:
“I was advised, in no uncertain terms, to have nothing to do with you and to not speak or email you … if I did I would cause more problems to you, [Prince Andrew] and myself.”
Ferguson Pushes Back
In response to the backlash, Ferguson’s representatives told The Guardian she stands by her public condemnation of Epstein and claimed her email was sent under duress.
“Like many people, she was taken in by [Epstein’s] lies,” the statement read.
“As soon as she was aware of the extent of the allegations against him, she not only cut off contact but condemned him publicly, to the extent that he then threatened to sue her for defamation for associating him with pedophilia.”
The representative insisted the email was an attempt to placate Epstein amid threats of legal action.
Epstein Scandal Fallout
Epstein died in a Manhattan jail cell in 2019 while awaiting trial on federal sex trafficking charges involving underage girls.
His death was ruled a suicide.
His longtime companion, Ghislaine Maxwell, was convicted in 2021 of aiding his abuse of minors and is serving a 20-year prison sentence.
Ferguson remained close with Prince Andrew following their 1996 divorce, and they still live together today.
She stood by him even as Andrew’s ties to Epstein triggered his own downfall.
Buckingham Palace stripped Andrew of his military titles and royal patronages in January 2022 as he faced sexual assault allegations connected to Epstein’s network.
