Radical Democrat ‘Squad’ Renews Calls to ‘Abolish ICE’

Members of the far-left group of congressional Democrats known as the “Squad” are renewing calls to abolish U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

In a post on X, Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) wrote:

“[Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE)] is beyond reform and should be abolished.”

Omar’s comments came in response to the recent arrest of Kilmar Abrego Garcia, a violent MS-13 member and illegal alien.

Abrego Garcia was taken into ICE custody on Monday, and federal officials plan to deport the foreign national to Uganda in East Africa.

Other members of the Squad have previously voiced similar positions.

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) described ICE as “a rogue agency that should not exist” in a May campaign email.

In earlier social media posts, Ocasio-Cortez wrote:

“#AbolishICE means not having an agency that incarcerates children and sexually assaults women with impunity.

“It does not mean abolish deportation.

“Also, I have no problem saying white supremacy has no place in this country.”

In another post, AOC continued:

“Here’s what must be done: We must #abolishICE.

“Its very structure is about as undemocratic and authoritarian as it gets in the US.

“We have to replace ICE with an updated INS-like structure that handles crime through the same court system we’ve had for well over 100 years.”

She also responded critically to a post from ICE’s official account that commemorated Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday.

Rep. Pramila Jayapal (D-WA) has also supported restructuring or ending ICE.

In 2018, she introduced legislation to “terminate” the agency, stating:

“There was enforcement of our immigration laws before ICE was created, and there will be after ICE, as an agency, is gone.

“We should eliminate the agency as it stands and start from scratch to restructure its functions.”

In 2025, Jayapal introduced narrower legislation, the “Stop ICE from Kidnapping U.S. Citizens Act,” which sought to limit the agency’s authority.

Omar has also previously written in support of expanded refugee admissions.

In a June 2024 op-ed, she argued that the U.S. should “Open the Door Wider for Refugees.”
