Republican Rep. Tim Burchett (R-TN) announced Friday that he will replace retiring Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene as chairman of the House subcommittee overseeing the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) initiative.
Burchett is pledging to move substantive legislation rather than stage what he called performative hearings.
In a video statement recorded from his barn, Burchett said he was honored by the appointment.
He emphasized that the subcommittee’s work would focus on producing results.
“We’re going to produce legislation,” Burchett said.
“This is not just going to be a gripe session.”
He continued by noting that some proposals could be bipartisan because they are “just doing what’s right.”
Burchett, who served on the subcommittee during its initial iteration last year, said his goal is to push bills through committee and onto the House floor, not simply to introduce measures and deliver speeches.
“We’re not going to have a mutual back-patting society,” he said.
“We’re going to actually go move the legislation to the committees.”
The Tennessee lawmaker warned that obstruction would be met with public accountability, tying the urgency of the effort to the nation’s fiscal outlook.
“We’re $38 trillion in debt,” Burchett said.
He added that recent revelations of waste and fraud, including those uncovered in Minnesota, represent “the tip of the iceberg.”
Burchett praised tech entrepreneur Elon Musk, who launched the DOGE effort and whose team identified billions of dollars in waste, fraud, and abuse across the federal government.
Findings from the initiative were incorporated into the Trump-backed “Big Beautiful Bill.”
Meanwhile, the Trump administration has also reduced the size of the federal bureaucracy in line with DOGE recommendations.
In closing, Burchett directly appealed to Musk to re-engage with Congress on the initiative.
“I hope Elon Musk will get reengaged with us,” Burchett said.
“And I look forward to working with him, as I did in the past.”
Musk left the administration last summer following a turbulent end to his tenure that included a public dispute with President Donald Trump.
The two have since reconciled, and Musk has pledged support for Republican congressional candidates ahead of the midterm elections.
He was most recently seen at Mar-a-Lago last weekend.
Musk was spotted dining with the president and First Lady Melania Trump.
