Republican Rep Jim Baird’s Wife Dies After Hit-and-Run

Danise Baird, the wife of Rep. Jim Baird (R-IN), has died following complications from the severe injuries she suffered in a January hit-and-run crash, the congressman’s office has announced.

She was married to the Indiana Republican for 59 years.

The crash occurred as the couple was driving back to Washington, D.C. Congressman Baird was also injured but was released from the hospital in less than 24 hours.

He later missed time on Capitol Hill while recovering.

President Donald Trump said the day after the crash that Baird and his wife were initially expected “to be okay.”

In the weeks that followed, the family shared hopeful updates.

Their son, Beau Baird, wrote on January 15 that his mother had “a long recovery ahead of her after suffering nearly 15 breaks and fractures” in the “serious hit-and-run accident.”

On Feb. 1, Beau shared that his mother “has taken her first assisted steps,” adding, “while we’re hopeful, we know there’s still a road ahead, and family is at the center of all we do.”

Despite those signs of progress, complications ultimately proved fatal.

High School Sweethearts, Decades of Marriage

Jim and Danise Baird were high school sweethearts and raised three children together, according to the congressman’s House biography.

Friends and colleagues often described Danise as a steady presence by her husband’s side throughout his years of public service.

Lawmakers from across the country expressed condolences.

“This is incredibly sad news from our dedicated colleague Jim Baird,” Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-NY) wrote.

“May God wrap them in His comfort through the difficult days ahead.”

Rep. Lisa McClain (R-MI) said she and her husband were praying for the Baird family to “find comfort, strength, and peace in the days ahead.”

A Life of Faith and Service

Rep. Baird, an Army veteran who served during the Vietnam War, has represented Indiana’s 4th Congressional District since 2019.

Known for his work on agriculture and veterans issues, he represents a largely rural district rooted in farming and small-town values.

For nearly six decades, Danise Baird stood beside him as a wife, mother, and partner in service.

Her passing marks the end of a long marriage defined by faith, family, and commitment to country.
