Republicans are launching a new U.S. House caucus aimed at confronting what they warn is the growing influence of Sharia law inside the United States.
Texas conservative Reps. Keith Self (R-TX) and Chip Roy (R-TX) have just announced the formation of the “Sharia Free America Caucus,” Fox News reported.
The effort reflects a broader push among conservatives to address national security concerns tied to radical Islamist ideologies.
Self said the caucus is designed both to educate the public and give lawmakers a platform to respond to what he calls an emerging threat.
“Anytime you go to a fight, you bring as many friends with you as you can. I’m a military guy,” Self said.
“So what we need to do is build this caucus now so that we can start educating the American people to the dangers of Sharia in the United States.”
He added that Sharia law is “fundamentally incompatible with the U.S. Constitution.”
Self framed the caucus as a pre-emptive measure to safeguard American legal and cultural norms.
The lawmakers also expect support in the Senate from Sen. Tommy Tuberville (R-AL), whom Self said could help carry the caucus’s priorities across both chambers.
Policy Priorities: Immigration Restrictions and Terror Designations
Among the caucus’s first legislative proposals is a bill to bar foreign nationals who “adhere to Sharia” from entering the United States.
Another measure would formally designate the Muslim Brotherhood as a terrorist organization.
Roy argued the issue is both cultural and national-security driven.
“America is facing a threat that directly attacks our Constitution and our Western values: the spread of Sharia law,” Roy said.
“From Texas to every state in this constitutional republic, instances of Sharia adherents masquerading as ‘refugees’ and in many cases, sleeper cells connected to terrorist organizations, are threatening the American way of life.”
Sharia and the U.S. Legal System
Sharia is broadly defined as a religious legal framework followed by devout Muslims.
In practice, however, the term often refers to state-enforced legal codes in non-secular Islamic countries such as Iran. In its most extreme manifestations, such as under ISIS, offenses like blasphemy carried the death penalty.
The U.S. Constitution explicitly blocks any religious legal system from governmental enforcement, and the caucus stops short of claiming Sharia is being imposed in American courts.
Rather, Self and Roy argue that the ideology itself presents a cultural and security challenge if left unchecked.
A Symbolic but Strategic Culture-Fight Move
While the caucus is largely symbolic in its early stages, its formation underscores ongoing cultural battles in Washington over immigration, national identity, and security threats tied to extremism.
Self pointed to unrest in the United Kingdom and France, where clashes involving Muslim migrants and local populations have triggered political backlash and galvanized right-of-center parties.
The lawmakers say their goal is to prevent the United States from repeating Europe’s trajectory.
