Hollywood was rocked Monday as new reports indicated that Nick Reiner, the son of director Rob Reiner and Michelle Singer Reiner, has been taken into custody and booked for murder following the couple’s gruesome deaths in their Los Angeles mansion.
According to sources who spoke with the Daily Mail, investigators believe the couple was fatally stabbed and had their throats slit after a heated argument with a relative, understood to be Nick Reiner, turned deadly inside the family’s $13.5 million Brentwood home on Sunday afternoon.
Detectives are treating the case as a double homicide.
Rob Reiner, 78, and Michelle Singer Reiner, 68, were discovered by their daughter Romy, who lives across the street.
She found the bodies when she entered the six-bedroom property on Sunday afternoon.
Romy reportedly told police that a family member “should be a suspect” because they are “dangerous,” according to TMZ.
The Los Angeles Fire Department responded to the residence at approximately 3:30 p.m., where firefighters located the two deceased adults.
The LAPD later confirmed the case had been turned over to its Robbery-Homicide Division.
Nick Reiner, 32, has a well-documented history of addiction struggles.
In a 2016 interview with People, he said:
“I was homeless in Maine.
“I was homeless in New Jersey.
“I was homeless in Texas.
“I spent nights on the street.
“I spent weeks on the street. It was not fun.”
A screenwriter, he co-wrote the semi-autobiographical film “Being Charlie,” which chronicled his addiction and the strain it placed on his relationship with his father.
He told the outlet he had entered rehab approximately 18 times by his early twenties and had lived on the streets after refusing to return to treatment.
At the time of Being Charlie’s release, he said he hoped to stay sober so he would never end up homeless again:
“When I was out there, I could’ve died. It’s all luck.
“You roll the dice, and you hope you make it.”
The family had gathered publicly as recently as September, posing together, including Nick, Romy, and their eldest son Jake and his wife Maria Gilfillan, for what is now believed to be their final family photo at the premiere of “Spinal Tap 2,” which Rob Reiner directed and wrote.
A Reiner family spokesperson confirmed the couple’s deaths, saying:
“It is with profound sorrow that we announce the tragic passing of Michele and Rob Reiner.
“We are heartbroken by this sudden loss, and we ask for privacy during this unbelievably difficult time.”
Rob Reiner rose to prominence as both an actor and director, responsible for some of the most iconic films of the 1980s and 1990s, including “Stand By Me,” “The Princess Bride,” “When Harry Met Sally,” “Misery,” “A Few Good Men,” and “The American President.”
LAPD detectives have not yet released official confirmation regarding the suspect’s identity.
However, multiple outlets report that Nick Reiner is currently being questioned and has been arrested and booked on murder charges.
