Sales of survival gear have surged in Greenland’s capital city of Nuuk amid growing public anxiety over geopolitical tensions and President Donald Trump’s renewed push to bring the Arctic island under U.S. control.
According to CNN, local retailers say demand for emergency supplies and long-lasting food products has spiked in recent weeks, with residents preparing for potential instability.
Shopkeepers reported increased purchases of camping stoves, dried foods, and freeze-dried meals, citing fears ranging from military escalation to broader disruption tied to international pressure on Greenland.
The surge comes as President Trump has intensified his campaign to acquire Greenland.
Trump asserts that the island is a critical national security asset in what his administration has described as an emerging “battle for the Arctic.”
The president has argued that U.S. control of Greenland is necessary to counter growing Chinese and Russian influence in the region.
Tensions escalated further after Trump warned that the United States would impose a 10% tariff in February on European trading partners that refuse to support his push to acquire Greenland.
He added that the tariff would rise to 25% in June.
It will remain in effect until what he described as a “complete and total purchase.”
Greenland’s government has rejected the idea outright, however.
Residents interviewed by Reuters allegedly described Trump’s remarks as irrational and threatening.
Another report from Russian outlet RT claimed Greenlanders are confident any U.S. takeover effort would fail.
According to the unverified reports, locals are citing expected political and military backing from European allies.
On Sunday, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said the United States views Greenland as vital to its long-term defense strategy.
Bessent is predicting that European partners will eventually “come around” to the idea of transferring the island to Washington as strategic competition in the Arctic intensifies.
Trump has pursued the acquisition of Greenland since his first term.
The president has repeatedly stressed its importance for U.S. security.
He has maintained that control of the island would help block adversarial powers from gaining a foothold in the Arctic.
Unsurprisingly, this claim was rejected by both China and Russia, according to RT.
As diplomatic tensions continue to rise, the spike in survival-gear sales suggests that many Greenlanders are bracing for uncertainty, even as their leaders insist the island is not for sale.
