The U.S. Senate has voted unanimously to officially honor the late Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk.
The move will designate his birthday, October 14, as the “National Day of Remembrance for Charlie Kirk.”
The resolution was introduced by Sen. Rick Scott (R-FL) and co-sponsored by nearly two dozen Republicans.
It passed by voice vote and was adopted without objection.
While largely symbolic, the measure marks a significant recognition of Kirk’s influence on civic education and conservative activism.
The text of the resolution “recognizes Charlie Kirk for his contribution to civic education and public service” and urges schools, civic groups, and Americans across the nation to commemorate the day with activities, prayers, and ceremonies that highlight Kirk’s core principles of faith, liberty, and democracy.
Scott Praises Kirk’s Legacy
“Charlie was a good man — a devout husband, father, and friend,” Scott said on the Senate floor.
“His life was shaped by his faith and the idea that in America, debate and discussion are crucial to the betterment of our country.”
“He believed in God, the American dream, the value of family, and the principles of our great nation,” Scott continued.
The senator noted that Kirk welcomed debate even with those who opposed him.
“He didn’t care if you agreed or disagreed with his ideas,” Scott said.
“He welcomed the opportunity to respectfully and peacefully debate ideas in the court of public opinion.”
House Resolution Sparks Division
The Senate’s action followed a contentious House debate over a similar measure introduced by Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA).
That resolution honored Kirk’s life and legacy while also condemning political violence in all forms.
Johnson’s measure praised Kirk for his “steadfast dedication to the Constitution, civil discourse, and Biblical truth,” and urged Americans to reject political violence and recommit to respectful debate and shared values.
The House ultimately approved the resolution in a 215-95 vote, with every Republican voting in favor.
Ninety-five Democrats joined them, while 58 opposed and 38 voted present.
However, dozens of Democrats voted against it, including progressive Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY), Ilhan Omar (D-MN), Ayanna Pressley (D-MA), and Rashida Tlaib (D-MI).
National Recognition
Kirk, assassinated earlier this month at a Turning Point USA campus event, was remembered by both chambers of Congress for his work mobilizing a generation of young conservatives and championing Biblical and constitutional principles.
While the resolution does not carry the force of law, it reflects a growing national recognition of Kirk’s influence on civic engagement and the conservative movement.
