Sheriff: Home of Savannah Guthrie’s Missing Mom Is Now a ‘Crime Scene’: ‘She Did Not Leave on Her Own’

Authorities in Arizona launched an urgent search late Sunday for the mother of Savannah Guthrie, after the 84-year-old woman disappeared from her home in Tucson.

Nancy Guthrie was last seen at approximately 9:30 p.m. Saturday at her residence near East Skyline Drive and North Campbell Avenue, north of the city, according to the Pima County Sheriff’s Department.

A family member reported her missing around noon Sunday.

The report prompted an expanded law enforcement response as investigators uncovered troubling details at the scene.

Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos told reporters:

“We’re pretty much just throwing everything at this that we can.

“Guthrie is 84 years old and is not of good physical health, and so naturally that’s a great concern.

He added that what deputies found inside the home raised “some concerns for us as well.”

“This is very concerning to us,” Sheriff Nanos said.

“We don’t typically get the sheriff out at a scene like this.

“But it’s very concerning what we’re learning from the house.

“And so we’ll just continue.

“The detective’s homicide team is out right now looking at the scene as well.”

Sheriff Nanos confirmed that the missing woman is the mother of Savannah Guthrie.

He said she is of “good sound mind” but suffers from physical ailments that limit her mobility.

During a news conference on Monday, Nanos said Nancy Guthrie’s house is a crime scene and that she didn’t leave on her own.

“We believe now, after we processed that crime scene, that we do, in fact, have a crime scene that we do, in fact, have a crime,” Nanos said.

“She did not leave on her own. We know that.”

While there was a search and rescue mission for Nancy Guthrie, Nanos said that it had been shut down, saying:

“We don’t see this as a search mission as much as we do a crime scene.”

Investigators have not ruled out foul play and have brought in the department’s criminal investigation unit due to the seriousness of the circumstances, the sheriff said.

Authorities are using helicopters, infrared technology, and drones in the search.

Additional assistance has been requested from Customs and Border Protection, according to Tom Winter.

Volunteers are also assisting with search-and-rescue efforts, while detectives are urging residents in the area to review any home surveillance or doorbell camera footage that could provide relevant information.

Savannah Guthrie released a statement Monday morning on NBC’s Today as the search continued.

“On behalf of our family, I want to thank everyone for the thoughts, prayers, and messages of support,” the statement said.

“Right now, our focus remains on the safe return of our dear mom.
