A reporter is now fearing for his life after exposing the Somali fraudster behind a massive fraud scheme that stole millions of dollars from taxpayers in Maine.
The unfolding Medicaid fraud scandal in Democrat-run Minnesota is now projected by federal prosecutors to reach as high as $9 billion.
However, the scandal-ridden state may now have an East Coast counterpart.
A bombshell investigation from The Maine Wire has revealed allegations of taxpayer fraud, political corruption, and even transnational death threats tied to the leadership of a high-profile migrant nonprofit in Maine.
Abdullahi Ali, executive director of Gateway Community Services, is at the center of the storm.
Earlier this month, The Maine Wire reported that Ali’s organization was accused of ripping off taxpayers through falsified records and fraudulent reimbursement claims.
According to a whistleblower, the alleged fraud ran through both Maine’s Medicaid program and later federal Paycheck Protection Program funds.
A former employee, Christopher Bernardini, told NewsNation that Gateway filed claims for services never rendered.
Internal forensic reviews have since surfaced evidence of systematic overbilling.
WATCH:
While running the Maine nonprofit, Ali was simultaneously engaged in politics abroad, mounting a campaign for President of Jubbaland and boasting to Kenyan media about helping raise funds for the Jubaland Somali army to “buy guns and bullets.”
Ali was claiming welfare handouts in the United States while stealing huge sums of taxpayer cash to fund his political campaign in Somalia.
But the controversy escalated even further when The Maine Wire’s editor, Steve Robinson, revealed that Ali “threatened to murder a journalist in Somalia who shared our reporting.”
Robinson said the threats expanded beyond Ali himself:
“Gateway Community Services CEO Abdullahi Ali yesterday attacked me personally, and now his fellow clan members — his son and cousin — are threatening to murder a journalist in Somalia who shared our reporting.”
“Dr” Abdullahi Ali hasn’t shown his face in Maine since we reported on the fraud allegations facing Gateway Community Services.
He’s remaining in Kenya, where he doesn’t have to answer to the IRS or FBI. Maine Democrats are still defending him. https://t.co/jy4fiICmbP pic.twitter.com/jxrA2PX2Cq

Robinson demanded to know why Maine’s Democratic leadership continues to financially support the organization:
“Why does Gov. Janet Mills continue to fund this organization with MaineCare dollars and no-bid contracts?
“And why are Democrats cravenly smearing the character of anyone who exposes fraud or calls out corruption?”

According to Robinson, the threats against journalists are not idle:
“Abdullahi Ali’s son and cousin are openly placing bounties on a Somali journalist’s head and calling for his killing.”
He went on to detail the whistleblower’s allegations:
“Ali’s former employee has made credible and detailed allegations of systematic fraud…
“Ali allegedly directed his company to invent fake MaineCare claims and defraud the taxpayers of Maine.”
Rather than deny the accusations, Robinson says Ali instead launched personal attacks, while political allies attempted to discredit those raising concerns:
“Ali has never denied these allegations.
“Instead, he has attacked me… his allies in Maine turn a blind eye or smear the reporters and politicians exposing fraud and corruption.”
Robinson also blasted Maine’s attorney general:
“Attorney General Aaron Frey refuses to investigate credible allegations of fraud against Gateway.
“Instead, the thugs in the Mills Administration had the whistleblower audited… Imagine that!
“Exposing corruption… only to have the Mills Team pull a mafia tactic and sic Maine Revenue Services on you.”
He further detailed deep interconnections between Gateway Community Services and the state’s Democratic Party infrastructure.
He named several Democrat lawmakers and staffers formerly tied to the organization.
Robinson accused the Mills administration of continuing to funnel public money to Gateway despite mounting red flags:
“Gov. Janet Mills has the authority to stop payments to Gateway, but instead she has issued them no-bid contracts.”
The parallels between Minnesota and Maine are so eerie.
In both states, there can be zero trust that DHHS and the Gov aren’t an extension of criminal orgs siphoning money from welfare.
Only federal intervention can end this culture of fear and retribution. https://t.co/Odm22ycavC

A Maine resident captured the growing public anger in blunt terms on social media:
“Is this the type of diversity we wanted here in Maine. Are you f*cking liberals happy?”
Maine State Sen. Matt Harrington told The National News Desk:
“It’s disgusting to me that they would do this.”
“You can’t rob a bank for millions of dollars,” he added.
“You shouldn’t be able to rob taxpayers of millions of dollars and get away with it.
“There absolutely needs to be a criminal investigation into this immediately.”
Here’s another video of Medicaid mogul Abdullahi Ali, a top ally of Gov. Janet Mills and Shenna Bellows, talking about how he plans to use the militia he bankrolled in southern Somalia.

The allegations echo patterns seen in Minnesota’s massive “Feeding Our Future” fraud case and the state’s widening Medicaid scandal.
It is raising the question of whether Maine could be the next state where systemic fraud, political patronage, and migrant-focused nonprofits collide.
From Minnesota to Maine, the pattern appears unmistakable.
The only question now is which Democrat-run state will be next.
