George Soros and his son Alex are bankrolling a new lawsuit brought by two illegal aliens who are suing President Donald Trump’s Department of Homeland Security (DHS) after the agency fined them for refusing to self-deport, despite having final removal orders.
The effort is being led by a far-left nonprofit that is heavily funded by the Soros’ Open Society Foundations (OSF).
The Immigrant Legal Resource Center (ILRC), which has received millions from OSF, is representing the two women in a class-action lawsuit filed Thursday.
The lawsuit asks a federal judge to block DHS from issuing massive civil fines to illegal aliens who defy deportation orders.
The ILRC secured a staggering $3.9 million grant from the Open Society Foundations in 2022 alone, and nearly $1 million more in 2021.
The organization routinely advocates for mass amnesty, sanctuary protections, and the dismantling of immigration enforcement.
Illegal Aliens Ignore Deportation Orders
Both plaintiffs, identified as Maria L. of Massachusetts and Nancy M. of Florida, have already been ordered deported by federal immigration judges.
However, they refused to leave and have instead remained in the United States for years.
According to the filing:
Maria L. has “hundreds of thousands of dollars” in fines after DHS penalized her for refusing to leave the country.
Nancy M. is facing roughly $1.8 million in fines despite being under an ICE supervision order and attending check-ins while pursuing family-based immigration relief.
Both women argue that DHS does not have the legal authority to issue civil penalties to deportation fugitives.
Yet, despite their arguments, the law, 8 U.S.C. § 1324d, explicitly allows DHS to fine individuals who ignore final orders of removal.
Leave Now or Face the Consequences
DHS officials have been clear, warning that the fines are part of a broader effort to enforce immigration law after years of mass noncompliance.
As DHS spokesperson Tricia McLaughlin stated:
“Our message is clear: If you’re in the country illegally, leave now or face the consequences.”
Breitbart News reported last month that DHS has issued more than 31,600 fine notices totaling over $9.6 billion to illegal aliens who refused to depart.
It’s a stark shift in enforcement under President Trump.
Soros-Backed Push to Undermine Immigration Law
The lawsuit, Maria L. v. Noem, was filed in the U.S. District Court for Massachusetts.
It represents a direct challenge to one of Trump’s more aggressive tools for deportation enforcement.
Critics argue the challenge is part of a long-running strategy by Soros-funded groups to weaken U.S. immigration laws through litigation and political pressure.
The ILRC has supported sanctuary laws, lobbied against ICE cooperation, and pushed for the end of deportations entirely.
Now, it is working to shield deportation evaders from financial penalties designed to deter exactly this kind of conduct.
Undermining the Rule of Law
Two illegal immigrants, both ordered removed by judges, are suing the Trump administration because DHS enforced the law and penalized them for refusing to leave.
And the lawsuit is being spearheaded by an organization flush with Soros cash.
If the plaintiffs succeed, it could undermine one of the last tools immigration authorities have to discourage long-term illegal presence and further erode the rule of law at a time when border enforcement is already under massive strain.
The case now heads to federal court, where the outcome could have sweeping implications for immigration enforcement nationwide.
