Speaker Johnson Backs Effort to Impeach Activist Judges Over Anti-Trump Rulings

House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) has confirmed that he would support articles of impeachment against Democrat-aligned activist federal judges who have repeatedly overstepped their constitutional authority to undermine President Donald Trump.

Johnson signaled that the House may move forward with the effort after months of growing frustration with what conservatives describe as judicial activism.

Speaking at a press conference on Wednesday, Johnson was asked about Senate Republicans urging the House to pursue impeachment proceedings against specific judges.

“I’m for it,” Johnson said.

“Judge Boasberg is one who’s been mentioned.”

Johnson emphasized that impeachment is not a step Congress should take lightly, but argued that the conduct of some judges has crossed a line.

“Impeachment, as we have discussed all together many, many times, is an extreme measure,” Johnson said.

“But extreme times call for extreme measures.

“And I think some of these judges have gotten so far outside the bounds of where they’re supposed to operate, it would not be, in my view, a bad thing for Congress to lay down the law, so to speak, and to make an example of some of these egregious abuses.”

The speaker did not provide a timeline for when impeachment articles might be formally introduced, saying only, “We’ll see where it goes.”

Under the Constitution, the House needs only a simple majority to impeach a federal judge.

Removal, however, requires a two-thirds vote in the Senate.

Republican lawmakers have already begun laying the groundwork.

In March, Rep. Brandon Gill (R-TX) introduced articles of impeachment against anti-Trump U.S. District Judge James Boasberg.

It came after Boasberg’s rulings blocked President Trump from using the Alien Enemies Act to deport Venezuelan illegal alien gang members.

Gill also introduced impeachment articles against Boasberg in November over a separate decision tied to the Arctic Frost investigation.

Separately, Rep. Chip Roy (R-TX) introduced an impeachment resolution in October targeting U.S. District Judge Deborah Boardman for an indefensibly lenient sentence in the case of Nicholas Roske, the man who traveled to the home of conservative Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh in 2022 with a plan to kill him.

Boardman sentenced Roske to eight years in prison, far below the more than 30 years sought by federal prosecutors.

Roy’s resolution argues that the sentence failed to reflect the gravity of an assassination attempt against a sitting Supreme Court justice.

Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX), chair of the Senate Commerce Committee, said earlier this month that both judges “meet the standard for impeachment and for conviction and removal of office.”

Democrats have pushed back sharply, characterizing the impeachment effort as partisan retaliation.

Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI) said calls to impeach Boardman over the Roske sentencing “contradict basic law and history,” arguing that the case remains subject to appeal and should not be influenced by Congress.

Whitehouse also accused Republicans and the Trump administration of launching what he called an intimidation campaign against Boasberg, describing impeachment talk as part of a “barrage of threats by the MAGA movement.”

Republicans, however, argue the issue is not politics but accountability, saying lifetime-appointed judges who repeatedly substitute their own policy preferences for the law must face constitutional consequences.

As Johnson made clear, House leadership is no longer ruling impeachment off the table.
