Late-night host Stephen Colbert sparked controversy Thursday after calling former Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem a “domestic terrorist” during the opening monologue of his show.
Colbert made the remarks while discussing President Donald Trump’s decision to remove Noem from her role at the Department of Homeland Security.
“Let’s talk about Kristi Noem getting fired,” Colbert said at the start of the segment as the studio audience reacted.
“It is too soon to know exactly why Kristi Noem is gone, before we find out any more information about what happened,” he continued.
“I just want to say with absolute certainty, she is a domestic terrorist who deserves to go to Gitmo.”

Colbert Walks Back Comment
Moments later, Colbert walked back the statement.
“I’m sorry, I’m being told that is not true, but we were acting on the information we had at the time,” he said.
The comedian then continued criticizing Noem.
He suggested she lacked strong support inside the White House.

Noem Remains in Trump Administration
While Colbert framed the move as a firing, President Donald Trump announced that Noem will remain in the administration in a new role.
Trump said Noem will become Special Envoy for the Shield of the Americas, a new security initiative focused on cooperation across the Western Hemisphere.
At the same time, Trump announced he would nominate Sen. Markwayne Mullin (R-OK) to serve as the next Secretary of Homeland Security.
Colbert Show Ending After Financial Losses
Colbert’s comments came as his long-running late-night show approaches its final episodes.
CBS recently announced the program would be canceled after suffering tens of millions of dollars in financial losses and declining ratings.
The network confirmed that Colbert’s final show is scheduled to air on May 21.
