A new study has claimed that people suffering from asthma are causing “global warming” due to the “carbon emissions” from their inhalers.
Millions of Americans rely on inhalers for asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).
However, climate activists and their allies in academia are targeting those lifesaving devices as a threat to the planet.
A new JAMA study claims inhalers generate over 2 million metric tons of “carbon emissions” annually.
The “emissions,” the authors say, are equal to the output of 530,000 cars on the road.
The study singles out metered-dose inhalers (MDIs), which use hydrofluoroalkane (HFA) propellants, as the supposed villains.
MDIs are allegedly responsible for 98% of emissions.
Instead of focusing on affordability, access, or patient outcomes, researchers are urging a shift to “low-emission” alternatives.
Pharmaceutical giants like AstraZeneca are already pledging to replace traditional MDIs with new propellants, aligning with global climate goals rather than patient demand.
Study author Dr. William Feldman of UCLA framed the issue as an opportunity to fight “climate change,” saying:
“Inhalers add to the growing carbon footprint of the US healthcare system, putting many patients with chronic respiratory disease at risk.
“On the upside, there is tremendous opportunity to make changes that protect both patients and the planet by utilizing lower-emission alternatives.”
But critics warn the push reveals how globalist climate agendas are being prioritized over human health.
For patients living with asthma or COPD, inhalers are not optional; they are lifesaving.
Any move that makes them more expensive or harder to access risks prioritizing ideology over patient survival.
The study itself relied on prescription databases and emission models, rather than clinical outcomes.
Researchers now plan to compare “low-emission” and “high-emission” inhalers in different patient populations, while also studying how patents and pricing strategies could accelerate the adoption of “green” inhaler technologies.
“A key first step to driving change is understanding the true scale of the problem,” Feldman said.
“From there, we can identify what’s fueling these emissions and develop targeted strategies to reduce them.”
However, the danger is clear.
Once again, climate politics are being used as a wedge to reshape healthcare.
Instead of prioritizing effective, affordable treatment, regulators and corporations appear eager to impose environmental compliance.
The move could raise costs, limit availability, and shift control from patients and doctors to climate bureaucrats.
This isn’t the first time climate policy has collided with medical care.
Similar arguments have been made about diet, farming, and energy usage in hospitals, with critics warning that the goal isn’t health, but greater centralization and globalist control under the banner of “sustainability.”
For patients struggling to breathe, the last thing they need is government-approved rationing of their inhalers in the name of carbon neutrality.
