A Maryland resident has been arrested on attempted murder charges after allegedly showing up at the home of a Trump cabinet official with a manifesto and intent to kill.
Colin Demarco, 26, was arrested by Arlington County Police on January 22 after he appeared at the Northern Virginia residence of Office of Management and Budget Director Russell Vought.
According to court documents filed in Arlington County, Virginia, Demarco is accused of plotting to murder a victim identified only by the initials “R.V.”
Sources familiar with the case confirmed to CBS News that the initials refer to Vought.
Authorities say Demarco arrived at the residence wearing a surgical mask and gloves, which investigators interpret as an effort to conceal his identity during reconnaissance or an early stage of the alleged plot.
A Ring camera at the home captured footage of Demarco months before his arrest, evidence that investigators later used to identify and apprehend him.
Demarco was taken into custody without incident and is being held pending further proceedings.
He is scheduled to appear in court on February 23, 2026, when additional details regarding the charges are expected to be disclosed.
CBS News reported that Demarco faces attempted murder charges along with several additional felony counts tied to the alleged scheme.
Motive Linked To Political Views
Office of Management and Budget Director Russell Vought, 49, previously served in the same role during President Donald Trump’s first administration.
He was renominated and confirmed again in 2025 following Trump’s reelection.
Investigators indicated that Demarco allegedly developed the assassination plot based on his views about Project 2025, a federal government restructuring blueprint created by the Heritage Foundation.
Democrats repeatedly attacked the proposal during the 2024 presidential campaign.
Former President Joe Biden and failed presidential candidate Kamala Harris argued it would fundamentally reshape the country.
President Trump said on the campaign trail that while he shared areas of agreement with the Heritage Foundation, Project 2025 represented a think-tank wishlist rather than his governing blueprint.
He instead pointed to his own Agenda 47 policy platform.
Court records state that Demarco believed Trump’s reelection would lead to a “fascist takeover” of the United States.
CBS News further reported that U.S. Marshals discovered Demarco had claimed to be writing a manifesto and drafted notes referencing a weapons stash and a “Body Disposal Guide.”
Plot Appears To Have Stopped Early
The alleged scheme does not appear to have progressed beyond Demarco’s approach to Vought’s home.
Court filings related to the incident do not mention any weapons at the residence, and there is no indication Demarco made direct contact with Vought.
The arrest comes amid heightened security concerns involving threats against Trump administration officials.
White House Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller and Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem have recently relocated to military facilities following threats directed at their homes and families.
Federal and local authorities continue to investigate the case as Demarco awaits his next court appearance.
