Republican Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) has just put several rogue activist judges on notice over their coordinated efforts to undermine President Donald Trump’s executive powers and target the Democrats’ opponents.
Cruz, chair of the Senate Judiciary Subcommittee on Federal Courts, Oversight, Agency Action, and Federal Rights, has scheduled a hearing for Tuesday, November 18, to review the conduct of federal judges.
The hearing will also explore whether impeachment proceedings may be warranted.
According to Just the News, the hearing will begin at 2:30 p.m. ET in the Dirksen Senate Office Building, and a livestream will be available to the public.
The subcommittee will examine what Cruz and other lawmakers describe as “judicial overreach” in recent federal cases, including matters related to Democrat-aligned Chief Judge James Boasberg of the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia, an appointee of former President Barack Obama.
Focus on Operation Arctic Frost
Judge Boasberg’s handling of Operation Arctic Frost, an investigative effort that issued 197 subpoenas targeting members of Congress and private citizens, has drawn scrutiny from lawmakers.
It follows reports that communications belonging to Cruz were among the materials sought.
Then-Special Counsel Jack Smith reportedly requested Cruz’s communications from AT&T.
Judge Boasberg approved the request while also issuing a non-disclosure order preventing the company from informing Cruz that his records had been obtained.
Court documents reportedly justified the secrecy order by suggesting that advance notice might lead to evidence destruction or witness intimidation.
Cruz sharply criticized the decision, calling for congressional accountability.
“Merrick Garland was a fundamentally corrupt attorney general,” Cruz said last month.
“Jack Smith was a fundamentally corrupt prosecutor.
“This was a political enemies list from the beginning.
“If a judge signs an order reaching a factual conclusion for which there is zero evidence whatsoever, that judge is abusing his power.
“I am right now calling on the House of Representatives to impeach Judge Boasberg.”
Context and Broader Judicial Oversight
The planned hearing follows a series of disputes between Congress and the federal judiciary over nationwide injunctions and executive order challenges.
The issues have intensified amid partisan divisions over federal authority.
Several Republican lawmakers have introduced measures this year aimed at clarifying the limits of judicial power and reinforcing congressional oversight mechanisms.
No witnesses have yet been announced for the upcoming hearing.
However, congressional staff involved in the planning described the event as part of an ongoing review of judicial accountability procedures, including how the impeachment process applies to federal judges accused of misconduct.
Supporters of Boasberg and judicial independence more broadly have emphasized the importance of maintaining the separation of powers and avoiding political retaliation against members of the judiciary.
Cruz and his colleagues argue that accountability and independence are not mutually exclusive.
“There’s a difference between protecting judges from political pressure and protecting judges who abuse their authority to advance political agendas,” Cruz said.
The hearing next week will mark one of the most significant Senate inquiries into judicial accountability in recent years.
