Tim Walz Accused of Stonewalling Congressional Investigation into Somali Fraud Rings in Minnesota

The House Education and Workforce Committee is accusing Minnesota’s Democrat Governor Tim Walz of actively obstructing a congressional investigation into one of the largest Somali-led welfare fraud schemes in the country.

In a letter sent Monday, Committee Chairman Rep. Tim Walberg (R-MI) said Walz’s staff has failed to comply fully with a September 2024 subpoena.

The subpoena seeks documents tied to the Feeding Our Future (FOF) scandal.

The Somali-led nonprofit was at the center of a $300 million taxpayer fraud scheme involving federal pandemic relief funds intended to feed low-income children.

Subpoena Compliance Dispute

According to Walberg’s letter, the Minnesota Department of Education (MDE) provided incomplete records in response to the committee’s subpoena.

The materials reportedly excluded text messages between Gov. Walz and members of his staff.

The committee is now seeking additional communications, including records tied to how Walz’s office handled congressional oversight requests.

The stated goal of the probe is to determine whether Minnesota properly safeguarded federal nutrition programs funded by taxpayers.

The letter states:

“Reporting over the last five to 10 years and the criminal trials of FOF personnel and others continue to raise grave concerns about whether the [nutrition] programs have adequate safeguards in place against fraud, waste, and abuse.”

It continues:

“Related questions exist of whether Minnesota and MDE have exercised sufficient oversight of food service sponsors and providers.”

Scale of the Feeding Our Future Fraud

Federal officials charged nearly 80 defendants in connection with the scheme.

More than 50 convictions have been secured so far, according to Attorney General Pam Bondi.

The nonprofit’s leader, Abdiaziz Shafii Farah, was sentenced in August to 28 years in prison.

Prosecutors allege that Feeding Our Future falsely claimed to serve millions of meals to children during the pandemic, billing the federal government for services that were never provided.

The fraud has been described as one of the largest pandemic-related scams uncovered to date.

Political Fallout

President Donald Trump has taken action in response to widespread welfare fraud in Minnesota.

Federal health and agriculture funding to the state has been paused amid ongoing scrutiny.

President Trump has also pursued stricter immigration enforcement involving Somalia, citing concerns about systemic abuse of public assistance programs.

Gov. Walz has acknowledged the fraud while defending his broader welfare policies.

In December, Walz said:

“Those people are going to jail.

“We’re doing everything we can.”

He also claimed that President Trump is using the scandal to “demonize” Minnesota’s Somali community.

Oversight and Accountability Questions

The House committee’s letter suggests deeper concerns about whether state-level oversight mechanisms were sufficient, or whether warning signs were ignored.

Lawmakers are now pressing for full transparency, including internal communications that may clarify what state officials knew about potential fraud and when.

Gov. Walz announced in January that he is ending his reelection campaign and will not seek public office again.

The congressional investigation remains ongoing, with the House committee signaling it expects full compliance with its subpoena.

At stake is not only Minnesota’s handling of pandemic-era relief funds, but broader questions about accountability for federal programs that distribute billions in taxpayer dollars.
