President Donald Trump escalated his crackdown on Washington, D.C.’s out-of-control crime problem.
On Friday morning, Trump warned of a possible federal takeover of the nation’s capital if Democrat Mayor Muriel Bowser continues to misrepresent crime statistics.
In a Truth Social post, Trump declared victory in his effort to restore safety to the city.
The president is pointing to a stretch without murders for the first time in years.
“Washington, D.C. is SAFE AGAIN!” Trump wrote.
“The crowds are coming back, the spirit is high, and our D.C. National Guard and Police are doing a fantastic job.
“They are out in force, and are NOT PLAYING GAMES!!!
“As bad as it sounds to say, there were no murders this week for the first time in memory.”
But the president turned his attention squarely on Bowser.
Trump blasted blasted Bowser for spreading what he called “false and highly inaccurate crime figures.”
“Mayor Muriel Bowser must immediately stop giving false and highly inaccurate crime figures, or bad things will happen, including a complete and total Federal takeover of the City!” Trump added.
“Washington D.C. will soon be great again!!!”
The mayor’s office has not responded.
The warning marks the latest step in Trump’s sweeping push to reestablish law and order in the capital.
Last week, Trump issued an order requiring Bowser to provide the services of the Metropolitan Police Department “for Federal purposes,” while also directing the Secretary of Defense to activate members of the D.C. National Guard to support the crime crackdown.
Trump has previously threatened federal control, most recently on August 5, when he warned that if D.C. leaders failed to bring crime under control, “we will have no choice but to take Federal control of the City, and run this City how it should be run, and put criminals on notice that they’re not going to get away with it anymore.”
The president had also raised the issue during Joe Biden’s administration in 2023.
Trump called D.C. a “FILTHY AND CRIME RIDDEN EMBARRASSMENT TO OUR NATION” where murders and violent crime had “shattered” records and driven tourists away.
Bowser, a longtime Trump critic, has sought to paint a different picture.
Last week, she posted on social media that “violent crime in DC is at its lowest level in 30 years,” attributing the change to legal and strategic adjustments made after what she acknowledged was “an unacceptable spike in 2023.”
“Now, crime levels are not only down from 2023, but from before the pandemic,” Bowser claimed.
“Our tactics are working, and we aren’t taking our foot off the gas.”
The clash underscores a broader struggle between Trump’s law-and-order approach and Democrat leaders who insist that cities like Washington are turning a corner on crime despite widespread public perception and statistics from other sources showing otherwise.
For Trump, the fight over D.C. is more than a local issue.
By threatening a full federal takeover, the president is signaling his willingness to override Democrat leadership in the capital itself if that’s what it takes to deliver safety and security.
