President Donald Trump has ignited fresh political fireworks after taking aim at Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) amid mounting questions surrounding her family’s rapid accumulation of wealth.
Trump blasted Omar while speaking during a White House press briefing on Tuesday to mark the first anniversary of his second-term inauguration.
The president, who entered the briefing as officials highlighted first-year accomplishments, pivoted during remarks on immigration enforcement to target the Somalia-born Minnesota Democrat.
While underscoring the dangers faced by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers as they target violent offenders, Trump said:
“I was told that Ilhan Omar is worth $30 million.
“She never had a job.
“She’s a crooked congressman.”

Trump’s remarks come as House Republicans intensify scrutiny of Omar’s finances amid a sprawling Minnesota fraud scandal that has already cost taxpayers an estimated $9 billion.
GOP lawmakers are questioning how Omar and her husband, Democrat political consultant Tim Mynett, went from near financial collapse to potentially being worth tens of millions of dollars in just over a year.
According to Omar’s 2024 financial disclosure, the bulk of the family’s newfound wealth is tied to Rose Lake Capital, an investment firm co-founded by Mynett in 2022.
Court filings from a lawsuit involving a related entity show Rose Lake had just $42.44 in its bank account in late 2022.
By the following year, the firm’s value was listed as high as $25 million.
House Oversight Committee Chairman Rep. James Comer (R-KY) confirmed that committee attorneys are weighing whether to subpoena Mynett over what he described as questionable business dealings.
“We’re going to get answers, whether it’s through the Ethics Committee or the Oversight Committee, one of the two,” Comer said.
“There are a lot of questions as to how her husband accumulated so much wealth over the past two years.
“It’s not possible. It’s not,” the chairman asserted.
“I’m a money guy. It’s not possible.”
Federal law enforcement has also taken an interest.
A law enforcement source told The New York Post that investigators are examining political figures potentially connected to the Minnesota fraud scheme, noting that scrutiny has intensified under the Trump administration.
“We are investigating all politicians potentially connected to any of this in Minnesota,” the source said.
“You can read between the lines.”
The source reportedly added that, unlike in prior years, “Team Trump is on top of it.”
According to the report, the FBI was briefed during the Biden administration on concerns involving companies linked to Mynett.
Wall Street sources consulted by the outlet described Rose Lake Capital as a “red flag,” citing a lack of a verifiable track record despite claims that firm leadership previously managed $60 billion in assets.
Several high-profile names once listed as advisers to Rose Lake have since disappeared from the firm’s website, including former Sen. Max Baucus (D-MT).
Baucus said he was never asked for permission to be listed and described past communications with the firm as “a little bit fishy.”
Republicans argue the timing of the wealth surge, combined with Omar’s political connections, demands formal action.
“The explosion of wealth, plus the fact that convicted fraudsters helped fund Ilhan Omar’s campaign, is worth an investigation by the Ethics Committee at the very least,” said House Majority Whip Rep. Tom Emmer (R-MN).
As federal probes widen and congressional investigators circle, Trump’s remarks signal that the administration and House Republicans are prepared to press the issue aggressively, casting the controversy as yet another test of accountability for entrenched Democrat power brokers.
