President Donald Trump is celebrating a major political victory after the Senate voted to end the Democrats’ record-breaking government shutdown, arguing that Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) overplayed his hand and triggered backlash within his own party.
During a wide-ranging interview on “The Ingraham Angle” Monday night, Trump told host Laura Ingraham that Schumer miscalculated.
“I think he made a mistake in going too far,” Trump said.
“He thought he could break the Republicans, and the Republicans broke him.”
The shutdown, the longest in U.S. history, began after Democrats blocked the House-passed spending plan 14 times, refusing to vote on a clean continuing resolution that did not extend Obamacare subsidies.
That blockade collapsed Sunday when eight Senate Democrats broke ranks, joining Republicans to advance the GOP plan.
The Senate voted 60–40 on Monday to move forward with ending the shutdown, with the final vote expected in the House later this week.
Now, Democrats are turning on their own leadership.
Rep. Ro Khanna (D-CA) is openly calling for Schumer to be replaced, and Trump says the backlash is long overdue.
“I’ve never seen a politician change so much,” Trump said.
“I feel badly ‘cause I know Chuck Schumer.
“I’ve known him since he was a person who loved Israel, and now he’s a Palestinian.
“He’s become a Palestinian… I’ve never seen a politician change so much.”
Obamacare Money and Illegal Alien Benefits
The shutdown centered on Democrats’ efforts to secure an extension of Obamacare subsidies.
Trump argues that it was always the real motive.
“What they really wanted was $1.5 trillion for people that came in illegally, people that come in through and out of prisons,” he said.
The president said Democrats were attempting to protect health insurance coverage for dangerous individuals.
“We’re trying to get them out, because we don’t want 11,000 murderers in our country,” Trump said.
“You don’t want it. Nobody wants it.
“And we have drug dealers, and we have everything else, and they wanted to make sure they got good healthcare.”
Trump warned that paying for healthcare for illegal immigrants would inevitably come at the expense of American citizens.
He also blasted Obamacare itself as unaffordable:
“The premiums have gone up like rocket ships,” Trump said.
“And I’m not even talking about just recently, I’m talking about for years they’ve been going up.”
Instead, Trump reiterated his vision for a system that gives individuals direct control of their healthcare dollars.
“I want, instead of going to the insurance companies, I want the money to go to an account for people where the people buy their own health insurance,” he said.
“They’re actually able to go out and negotiate their own insurance.”
Preventing Future Shutdowns
When asked how Republicans can prevent another shutdown when the current funding expires on January 30, 2026, Trump hinted at legislative changes.
“Well, we’re trying to put in a bill, as you know, or a bill that you can never do that again,” Trump said.
“You can’t just shut down the government because you’re trying to renegotiate a deal that you didn’t win.”
WATCH:
The president argued Democrats pushed the shutdown too far, triggering a public backlash and a revolt from within their own ranks.
Ultimately, the saga has left Schumer politically weakened and facing growing calls to step aside.
