President Donald Trump has called on Congress to immediately pass legislation ending “sanctuary” city policies nationwide, while demanding that Democrat governors and mayors cooperate with his administration to enforce federal immigration law.
In a lengthy Truth Social post, Trump singled out Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz and Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey, while expanding the call to Democrat leaders across the country.
“I am hereby calling on [Minnesota] Governor [Tim] Walz, [Minneapolis] Mayor [Jacob] Frey, and EVERY Democrat Governor and Mayor in the United States of America to formally cooperate with the Trump Administration to enforce our Nation’s Laws, rather than resist and stoke the flames of Division, Chaos, and Violence,” the president wrote.
Trump laid out four specific demands in the post:
1: That Gov. Walz and Mayor Frey “turn over all Criminal Illegal Aliens that are currently incarcerated in their State Prisons and Jails to Federal Authorities, along with all Illegal Criminals with an active warrant or known Criminal History, for Immediate Deportation.”
2: That state and local law enforcement “turn over all Illegal Aliens arrested by Local Police.”
3: That local police “assist Federal Law Enforcement in apprehending and detaining Illegal Aliens who are wanted for Crimes.”
4: That Democratic officials “partner with the Federal Government to protect American Citizens in the rapid removal of all Criminal Illegal Aliens in our Country,” noting that some Democrats in cities such as Memphis, Tennessee, and Washington, D.C., have already done so, resulting in safer streets.
Trump also pressed Congress to act.
“In addition, I am hereby calling on the United States Congress to immediately pass Legislation to END Sanctuary Cities, which is the root cause of all of these problems,” he wrote.
“American Cities should be Safe Sanctuaries for Law Abiding American Citizens ONLY, not Illegal Alien Criminals who broke our Nation’s Laws.”
“All of these requests are rooted in COMMON SENSE,” Trump added, saying they would help “MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN.”
The president concluded by declaring that his administration is “standing by, and waiting for ANY Democrat to do the right thing.”
Following the post, Rep. Kevin Kiley (R-CA) appeared on Fox News, where he said he has already introduced legislation aimed at ending sanctuary city policies.
“I introduced the No Sanctuary for Criminals Act to bar sanctuary cities nationwide, enabling immigration enforcement to proceed in an orderly way focused on public safety,” Kiley said.
“It’s time to pass this bill, turn down the temperature, and find common ground to stop further tragedies.”

Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) also praised the president’s proposal, calling it a “home run solution.”
“Wow. Home run solution, Mr. President, to the chaos facing our country from sanctuary city policies,” Graham said.
“You and your team have come up with a remedy that Democrats should accept and America needs.”
Graham said the plan would ensure cooperation between federal authorities and sanctuary jurisdictions to remove violent and convicted felons, noting that “Ninety percent of Americans support this.”
He also endorsed Trump’s push to permanently eliminate sanctuary city policies, arguing they incentivize illegal immigration and fraud.
“In my view, sanctuary cities incentivize massive fraud like we have seen in Minnesota,” Graham said.
“They continue to be a magnet for illegal immigration because if you get to one of these sanctuary cities, you wrongfully stay in America.”
Graham concluded by urging Democrats to put aside partisan differences.
“To my Democratic colleagues, I know you may not like President Trump, but you have to love the country,” he said.
“I ask that you do the same now.”
