President Donald Trump has suggested that the U.S. could send Tomahawk cruise missiles to Ukraine if Russia refuses to move toward a settlement in the ongoing war.
Speaking with reporters aboard Air Force One on Sunday, Trump described the Tomahawk as “an incredible weapon, a very offensive weapon.”
Trump hinted he would use the prospect of deployment as leverage in upcoming discussions with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
“I may tell him [Putin] that if the war is not settled, we may very well,” Trump said.
“We may not, but we may do it.
“I think it’s appropriate to bring up.
“The Tomahawk is an incredible weapon, a very offensive weapon, and honestly, Russia does not need that.
“I want to see the war settled.”
Talks with Zelensky
Trump said he spoke with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Sunday morning.
During the conversation, Zelensky pressed for additional military support.
“They need Patriots [missiles] very badly,” Trump explained.
“They’d like to have Tomahawks. That’s a step up.”
While Trump stressed that America must maintain its own defense capabilities, he noted the U.S. continues to provide weapons to NATO allies.
He contrasted his approach with that of the Biden administration, which he criticized for handing Ukraine “$350 billion” in aid without securing meaningful results.
“We gave him nothing, but we gave them respect and some other things,” Trump said of his own policy.
Zelensky confirmed the discussions on social media, writing that their talks “covered all the aspects of the situation,” including air defense, long-range strike capability, and energy infrastructure.
“President Trump is well informed about everything that is happening,” Zelensky added.
Warning to Moscow
Trump emphasized he might raise the Tomahawk issue directly with Putin as part of a push to bring the war to an end.
“I might speak to Russia about that, in all fairness,” Trump said.
“I told that to President Zelensky because Tomahawks are a new step of aggression.”
Russian officials have already signaled “extreme concern” over the possibility of the U.S. providing Ukraine with Tomahawk missiles.
Escalating Conflict
Trump’s comments came as Russia carried out a fresh wave of drone and missile strikes over the weekend.
The attacks injured at least 20 people in Kyiv, killing a child in the southeast, and crippling parts of Ukraine’s energy grid.
The strikes, part of Russia’s annual pre-winter campaign to damage Ukrainian infrastructure, underscored the ongoing pressure on Zelensky’s government and the stakes of Trump’s negotiations with both Kyiv and Moscow.
