President Donald Trump announced Friday that he will meet with Chinese President Xi Jinping in South Korea next month.
The news comes following what the president described as a “very productive” phone call between the two leaders.
The bilateral meeting will take place during the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit in Seoul on October 31 and November 1.
It marks the first face-to-face discussion between Trump and Xi since the president returned to the White House for his second term.
Trump said he also agreed to visit China in early 2026 and that Xi would make a reciprocal trip to the United States “at an appropriate time.”
President Trump’s Announcement
In a post on Truth Social, Trump wrote:
“I also agreed with President Xi that we would meet at the APEC Summit in South Korea, that I would go to China in the early part of next year, and that President Xi would likewise come to the United States at an appropriate time.
“The call was a very good one.
“We will be speaking again by phone, and we appreciate the TikTok approval.
“Both [sides] look forward to meeting at APEC!” he added.
Trump said the two leaders discussed trade relations, the war in Ukraine, and negotiations over TikTok.
The American takeover of TikTok remains a flashpoint in U.S.-China relations.
Beijing’s Response
Chinese state media described the talks as “pragmatic, positive, and constructive.”
According to China’s Foreign Ministry, Xi warned against “unilateral trade restrictions” and urged the United States to provide an “open, fair, and non-discriminatory business environment” for Chinese companies.
On TikTok, the ministry said Beijing would “respect the wishes of the company in question.”
China also welcomed “productive commercial negotiations” consistent with both nations’ laws and interests.
High Stakes Diplomacy
China has been a consistent target of Trump’s trade agenda, particularly over its role in fentanyl trafficking and unfair trade practices.
Tariffs imposed during Trump’s first term triggered a series of retaliatory measures from Beijing, setting the stage for ongoing negotiations.
Friday’s call was the second conversation between Trump and Xi since January.
The Trump administration continues pushing to balance tough-on-China policies with open channels for dialogue.
